Five years ago, Ken and Iris Shupe ditched their business careers and invested in the Bay Center / Willapa Bay, Washington KOA Journey Campground.
In those five short years, they’ve made numerous improvements to the property, and their dedication to great customer service has led to some of the highest guest review scores in the 490-campground KOA system.
Due to all of that progress, the Shupes were named as the recipients of KOA’s 2017 Rising Star Award. The award is given each year to the KOA franchise owner who has made significant progress in their campground business in five years or less.
“They are already among the leaders in our KOA system,” said KOA Chief Franchise Operations Officer Toby O’Rourke. “They play an active role in the KOA Owners Association and the steering committee for our KOA Journey campgrounds.”
Their small campground on Washington’s Pacific Coast has quickly become a highly desired stop for campers traveling coastal highways.
“They are never afraid to try something new,” O’Rourke said. “They invest in their property, listen to their guest’s feedback and react quickly.”
The Shupes recently converted some of the campgrounds tent sites to accommodate two yurts and upgraded four other tent sites into 50-amp RV sites to create modern, comfortable sites for their guests.
