Tips for Festival Road-Trippers
Before you start booking, let’s go over a few hard-won lessons from the festival circuit:
- Buy tickets early. For almost every festival on this list, tickets sell out months in advance. Don’t wait until you “decide for sure”; decide now and buy the ticket. You can always figure out the logistics later.
- Check the camping situation. Some festivals have few nearby campgrounds/RV parks. Make your KOA reservations at the same time you buy your tickets.
- The weather is a real variable in the fall. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Harvest Jazz & Blues, and LEAF are examples of outdoor events occurring in the shoulder season. Pack layers. Bring a rain layer even if the forecast looks perfect!
- Give yourself a day on either end. The best festival experiences happen when you’re not rushing. Arrive a day early to get your bearings, set up camp without stress, and explore the surrounding area.
- Talk to strangers! Resist the urge to restrain yourself to a small social circle at big events. The person at the next campsite might know something about the festival or the region that completely changes your experience.
Festival season is one of the great underrated joys of life in North America, and the road trip there is half the fun. So load up the rig, download the playlists, and get out there. Fantastic festival experiences are waiting!
