KOA Kamp Green Recognition
This KOA meets the established criteria to become a greener campground operation and is recognized by the "Kamp Green" icon.
Just Two Hours from New York City: An Entire World Away!
This destination KOA offers camping fun for the whole family! Our newly redesigned and renovated campground with upgraded electric, free WI-FI and Cable TV has spacious campsites for big rigs, tents and everything in between. Enjoy camping without "roughing it" in our cabins and deluxe cabins.( also called Lodges) All of our RV sites are Full-Hookup.
Our Historic Hudson Valley location is a scenic 110 acre property originally developed by Henry Astor. We are located in Columbia County NY, in the foothills of the beautiful Berkshire Mountains bordering NY, MA and CT. The entire area is rich in history and fun with hundreds of attractions nearby.
We have a variety of activities and theme weekends for the whole family to enjoy. Come for a night or two or stay the whole season. You're guaranteed to have a great time at Copake KOA!
We are a security gated park. Our office hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. After hours, access to the park is controlled with a gate card which requires a $20 cash security deposit. We do have two full hookup campsites before the gates for after hour arrivals.
Meet Your Hosts
Gary and Cathy Reinards’ friends and business associates often comment on how different they both are, that they are complete opposites, like two bookends each with their own strengths and weaknesses that need each other to hold everything together.
Gary and Cathy met over 25 years ago through their jobs, as Cathy was selling bearings to the Power Transmission distributor Gary was a manager for. Copake KOA is the third business Gary and Cathy have owned together and the second campground. Their professional corporate backgrounds gave them the expertise to successfully operate their own businesses.
Gary and Cathy love camping. In fact that was one of the major reasons they sold their first campground they never got to camp anymore themselves. Lucky for them this campground is seasonal which does give them some time to go camping in their fifth wheel during the off season when Gary is not doing a renovation project with the winter staff. Camping at other campgrounds always brings them home full of ideas from other campgrounds to implement at their park.
It took multiple visits to this previously independent campground which could best be described as a diamond in the rough before Gary and Cathy decided this was the one. They purchased this campground in the Fall of 2009. Gary immediately began renovating and upgrading the park with the goal to become part of the KOA family.
This is definitely a family owned business. Their son Tom, called Little Boss by all the staff, works full-time at the park during the summer and whenever he is home from college where he is studying entrepreneurial business management with a goal of owning his own business someday. (Perhaps this one?) Tom enjoys working outside with Gary and the maintenance crew and only occasionally strays indoors to help out Cathy and the rest of the store and reservation staff.
Their daughter Chrissy works part time at the park. She helps Cathy plan all of the fun activities at the park and runs some of them. Christine is receiving her Master’s Degree in Vocal performance. When she is not performing at a summer opera house, she delights campers and staff with her amazing voice during Karaoke.
Even Grandma is a part of this business. Cathy’s mother Shirley, a retired school teacher, instructs campers on how to play bridge and canasta during the summer and is the designated dog walker for Rudy and Chibi, Gary and Cathy’s very spoiled Shih Tzu’s.
Cathy and Gary love being campground owners and are always willing to share their stories, dreams and ideas with anyone who is thinking about owning their own campground. They know they would have never been campground owners without the help and advice of other campground owners. In their minds the best thing about the campground business is that your so called competitors are truly your friends.
