Every year, we honor our “rising star”—KOA kampground owners who joined the KOA family less than 5 years ago, have a love of camping and are committed to developing the services and facilities that meet—and exceed kamper expectations.
At the annual KOA convention in Savannah earlier this month, the Rising Star Award was presented to David and Helena Johnson, owners of the Willits, California kampground.
“Helena and David have breathed new life into the Willits KOA,” says Pat Hittmeier, President of KOA. “From the moment they purchased the kampground, they have been finding new ways to make every camping stay a fantastic one.”
Visitors to the Willits KOA can now splash in a new swimming pool, as well as a spray park and hot tub. When not in the water, guests can have a ball in the video arcade room, or play basketball, bocce ball or horseshoes. A play tower awaits young campers and four-legged campers haven’t been forgotten either; a new dog playground has been added to help them enjoy some exercise too. The new group fire pit has also been a welcome addition.
The Willits KOA offers 70-foot pull-throughs, and three prestige sites are available to handle the big rigs. Tent campers are welcome to enjoy beautiful sites, while one room cabins and lodges are also available. Group camp sites are perfect for family reunions or large get-togethers.
“Willits has become an exceptional destination campground, thanks in large part to the Johnsons’ hard work,” Hittmeier says. “They have a vision for what they want their campground to be, they pay attention to even the smallest details and they have a great time doing it. We’re lucky to have them be a part of the KOA system.”
