What to Do While Camping With Your Dog

June 7, 2022

The great outdoors offers plenty of unique opportunities and exciting activities to experience with your pet. You can try various things to do with your pet, but some activities are better suited for some dog breeds than others. When you’re creating a plan for your camping trip, think of the types of activities your pet will enjoy. This chapter provides some camping ideas and everyday outdoor activities to inspire your itinerary.

Dog-Friendly Camping Ideas

Different campsites and locations have various activities you can engage in with your pet. Consider these dog-friendly activities if you’re unsure what to do with your canine on your camping trip:

  • Hiking the trails: If you have a high-energy dog with plenty of stamina, you can take your dog on a half-day hike. You’ll both get plenty of exercise while you explore the gorgeous landscape. Long hikes are also a great way to expend your pet’s energy, so they’re more relaxed at the end of the day.
  • Swimming at the beach: You can find dog-friendly beaches all across the country. Many dog breeds enjoy swimming or splashing around in the water. After a long, hot day on the trail, swimming in the cold water can help refresh their bodies. Swimming is also an excellent exercise for you and your pet. If you decide to go swimming with your pooch, you can also try floating treats or toys to encourage your pup to take the plunge.
  • Walking in the wilderness: There’s nothing better than taking your pet for a walk. If you’re ever in doubt and trying to find something to do, you can’t go wrong with a wilderness walk! Even the smallest and most laid-back pups enjoy stretching their legs. The exercise will be good for both you and your pet, and it’s an excellent opportunity to explore the campground and see everything there is to offer.
  • Playing fetch: Fetch is a great way to entertain your pet and allows them to exercise. You can play fetch almost anywhere, and all you need is a sturdy stick, frisbee or your dog’s favorite toy.
  • Cycling the trails: Many campgrounds have trails where you can bike down the path and your furry friend can run alongside you. If your dog is high-energy, this is an excellent way to help them exercise and spend their energy. If you have a smaller dog who doesn’t like to run, you can try putting them in a basket fastened to the bike so they can come along with you.
  • Canoeing in the lake: If your dog is well-trained and calm, you can take them on a canoeing trip with you. If your dog simply can’t resist the water or can’t stay still, canoeing might not be the best option since they can flip the boat. If you decide to go canoeing with your pooch, don’t forget to get a life jacket for you and your dog. If the canoe does flip, you can rest assured that you’re both protected.
  • Soaking in the sunshine: If you’ve got an older dog, they may prefer basking in the sun rather than high-intensity exercise. Both you and your canine companion can benefit from relaxing in the sunlight and getting your daily dose of vitamin D. If your dog has light skin or a thin coat, you may want to apply a dog-safe sunscreen if you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun. UV rays can damage a dog’s skin just like your skin, so you’ll want to protect your pet.
  • Learning new tricks: A camping trip is a perfect opportunity to train your dog. You’ll have plenty of time to focus on their training and reinforce good behavior. It doesn’t matter if they’re 6 months old or 6 years. Training can be done at any age, and even an old dog can learn new tricks.

These activities are an excellent way to bond with your pet and build a strong relationship. Camping can be a fulfilling way for you and your pet to create memories and strengthen your bond.
