There’s nothing like made-from-scratch banana pudding! Use this easy recipe to make the best homemade banana pudding.

Homemade Banana Pudding

Ingredients

Pudding

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Whipped Cream

  • 2 ounces cream cheese, room temp
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4-5 bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • Sprinkles, optional

Directions

  1. Make pudding at least 3 hours before assembling (or the night before!).
  2. Combine milk and vanilla in a medium saucepan and heat just until bubbles form around the edges of the pan – do not boil.
  3. Meanwhile whisk together sugar, flour, salt, egg yolks, egg and cream in a large bowl until well incorporated.
  4. Pour a small amount of hot milk into the egg mixture whisking constantly. Continue to drizzle in the hot milk, while whisking, until all the milk has been combined.
  5. Return mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until pudding thickens, about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a clean bowl, cover the top of the pudding with plastic wrap and let cool to room temperature.
  7. Chill for at least 3 hours or overnight.
  8. When you are ready to assemble the pudding, make whipped cream. (Note: adding cream cheese will help stabilize your whipped cream so it will keep its peaks!)
  9. Combine cream cheese and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment and beat until light and fluffy.
  10. Add the cream and continue beating until soft peaks appear.
  11. Scrape down bowl to get all the cream cheese and beat until stiff peaks appear. Add vanilla and salt and beat to incorporate.
  12. To assemble pudding, line the bottom of a trifle dish deep baking dish with vanilla wafers followed by sliced banana. Add half the pudding mixture followed by half the whipped cream. Add another layer of vanilla wafers and bananas, then the remaining pudding and top with another layer of bananas.
  13. Place the remaining whipped cream in a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip and pipe remaining whipped cream on top. (Alternately, you can spread remaining whipped cream on top of pudding.)
  14. Decorate with more vanilla wafers, bananas and sprinkles, if desired.
