The only issue that we as a family had was the poor internet. I realize that your KOA was in a valley so cell phone was not going to happen. Since we are living in 2026 and internet is an expectation for resort to have, you as KOA resort would in ensure that all your service meet a minimum standard. At my campsite and other locations in the resort you could not even download a webpage.

Every employee we encountered were friendly and fantastic. While the campsites are on top of each other, everything was clean and well taken care of.

Our RV camping spot was 199. The busiest corner of the entire campground but somehow it worked really well. Our kids could find us easily and we walked everywhere without needing a golf cart. Sooooo much fun!

Our stay was great! Lots of activities and things to do without having to leave. The check in staff were very polite and informative. The two ambassadors that we met, Mike and Dawn(husband and wife) were great! I feel that the restaurant/bar staff could’ve been more pleasant and attentive. Also the building could use some upgrades and housekeeping. Over all we had a great time and will be back.

We had a wonderful time. We had mechanical issues with our motor home but the staff rearranged our space and extended our stay so we could get back on the road This is a great place to be stuck for over a week.

What a fabulous park! Staff-Denise and Lenny where the rescuers of our Dog Nellie who popped out a window. Couldn’t be more thankful. All the amenities, watching the families and horseback riding will keep us coming back.

Throughout our one night stay, from check in to the dining experience, the playgrounds, pancake breakfast, and departure; everything was excellent 5 star+. The sites and facilities were excellent, staff were friendly and I now know why everyone says Mt. Rushmore KOA is the gold standard!! Thank you!

Second time here. A lot to do and close to Mt Rushmore!

Everything was really nice !

We enjoyed our stay and even extended it by three days. The only thing I wasn’t pleased with was the amount of chlorine in the pool and spa. It took the color right out of my swimsuit. I was glad I brought two with me and the colors faded in my second suit as well. I had double knee replacements and spent multiple times in the spa doing my exercises but it shouldn’t have ruined two suits.

Had lots of things to do for kids. Would be a great place to take our grandkids. We are retired and had no kids with us so was a little too busy for us. Loved the breakfast!

Our new favorite campground. Beautiful views and lots of amenities. I would like to see flags on the small bikes and carts. Kids become invisible next to my 1 ton truck.

Awesome actually still here just moved to a different site thanks to the efforts of Chris and Jeff playing Tetris due to me booking a site that didn’t have sewer they were both AMAZING and much APPRECIATED

Best KOA i have bee at so far. Fantastic location with many onsite amenities. Kids love it.

We were there over the 4th of July weekend and although our initial plans were not possible teh Palmer Gulch KOA is very nice for a family with kids. There is a shortage of adult things to do outside the pool and hot tub. The kids will have a blast. Was severely POd that cell phone service doesn't exist and WiFi access is next to useless; why post emergency numbers when nobody has cell service.

TOO Close! Too many people! Noisey! Dirty!!! Food at park gross!!! Not relaxing

Very family friendly clean and lots of activities
Jul 11, 2026
It is a great location, a clean/well maintained and lots of activities taking place each day. Onsite restaurant, ice cream place and general store. The live music was nice in the evening. The only thing I would recommend is to have either a paved road to the back area or some more gravel on the road. Our site also needed a little more gravel. We had a great time and would definitely return.

Palmer Gulch KOA was great! It was like family camp! The grounds were clean and bustling with fun activities for all ages. The staff were friendly and always available, creating a safe and welcoming environment. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Very expensive

Totally kid friendly with lots of things to do but the sites are TINY. When you make reservations you expect that your camper and your tow vehicle will fit but when you have to park your tow vehicle on the grass there’s nowhere to sit outside. I’m a KOA member but I’m pretty much done with camping on top of my neighbor.

Excellent location for seeing Mt. Rushmore, Custer SP and surrounding areas in one of the nicest KOA’s at and affordable price.

This campground is absolutely amazing. Staff is phenomenal, very kind and helpful. The camping sites are very well maintained and clean. Kids play area is outrageous. Very clean laundry rooms. All you can eat pancakes for $3.50 made freash every morning. Great restaurant on site. The amenities go on.

Mount Rushmore KOA Resort at Palmer Gulch is in my top 10 vacation resorts so far. So many amenities to choose from. The resort is spotless as well.

Very nice facility. Had no idea it was that huge and lots to do.
Jul 10, 2026
It was wonderful! Stayed 4 nights. Close to all the sites. Listened to music and had a glass of wine. It’s amazing place. Wish all loss were like this one! Thank you.

We have camped at Palmer’s Gulch many times over the past 20+ years! Everytime it better than before. I really appreciated the WiFi. Thank you and we will see you next year!

Very very good

Overall, our short stay was good. Plenty of staff to assist & monitor amenities for kids (jumping pillow & water slide, etc). Unfortunately, the weather limited our use of the amenities. The stables were a highlight. Our site was tucked away from everything on the side of the property. Although not ideal for us as it was a long walk to restroom/showers. Wifi was unusable. Still a beautiful place!

I loved the campgrounds. Very clean had lots to do. Highly recommend chuck wagon dinner. However I would not eat at the restaurant on the hill. Terrible food and worse service.
Jul 09, 2026
Our stay was not good. The 1st site we were given didn’t work. It may have been technically long enough for our rig, but it was between a tree and a building and on very narrow roads, making it impossible to get into. We could get into the 2nd site, but it was so small we could not sit outside comfortably. The staff was great, as were activities for kids, which we don’t have. Way too stressful

Very clean and organized operation! Close to several points of interest, lots of activities for the whole family!

Stayed for 6 days Great location for area sightseeing. Campground was too crowded and spaces too tight.

This is a kid’s paradise. Perfect in every way except one thing: gravel RV pads. If the premium RV pads were concrete or asphalt, this would be the crème de la crème..

What a wonderful camp and full of amenities. Staff are so nice and professional.

Enjoyed every minute of it!!!!
Jul 08, 2026
Made reservation for a site a year in advance and our site sucked. $91.00 a night for a site that wasn’t worth $50. We were 3 feet from our neighbor, couldn’t sit outside at night because we were right under a street light. The ATV’s run rampant. If you want a peaceful stay, enjoy nature, run the other way. If we were shown our assigned site before paying $455 we would have cancelled our sta

Very clean and great service!!! A lot of activities to do in camp alone. Close to Mt Rushmore and they rent side by sides on-site for trails!!! Close to Custer State park, Hill city, and Keystone!!

Wonderful stay. This KOA has it all - two pools, waterslide, horseback riding, winery, coffee, restaurant, etc., plus it's located near all the major Black Hills attractions! The staff was amazing and were everywhere. Our kids didn't want to leave. Thank you!

Overall, decent stay. A lot of fun things to do- horses were our favorite. Unfortunately, the pool near the lodge was always full and we could never get on the pickleball court, like we wanted. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and not once was our room cleaned up- I did not know until the last day that they don't come in the rooms without a request- this needs to be communicated at check-in (a family of four- there were towels piling up on the floor and would've been nice to have our trash taken out, plus we had to go to the desk to ask for toiletries and fresh towels). The lodge has very limited breakfast items (just cereals, muffins, yogurt, etc); would've been nice to have a free hot meal. TV didn't work for 3-4 days (offered very low compensation for this). While the front desk was overall helpful, there were times they could get snarky/short. Would've loved a fitness center/gym offered. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in shower was good. Room on arrival was clean. Would come again.

We planned our vacation to the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort based on a recommendation from a friend. Since we aren't campers, we opted for a camping cabin, thinking it would be a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The website notes that the cabins do not have air conditioning, but it also suggests that it's not needed because temperatures cool off significantly at night. While that may be true under normal circumstances, it wasn't our experience. We visited during a stretch of upper-90-degree temperatures, and our cabin received direct sunlight for most of the day. Because of the cabin's location and window configuration, there was very little airflow. We ran three fans 24 hours a day and kept the front door open whenever we were at the site, yet the cabin didn't reach a reasonably comfortable temperature until after 1:00 a.m. each night. In addition to the heat, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The mattresses were so firm that we may as well have been sleeping on the ground in a tent. The bottom bunk was especially difficult to use. There was very little clearance, making it hard to crawl in, roll over, or get out. I hit my head multiple times throughout the night. While the camping cabin was not a good fit for us, the resort itself was nice. The property is very large, but they also pack a lot of campsites into the available space. Our cabin site included a picnic table and fire ring, but there wasn't much additional room. We're used to having space to spread out, set up a grill, toss a ball around, and relax, and that wasn't really possible at our site. The bathrooms appeared to be recently renovated. The shower stalls were somewhat small and the water pressure could have been better, but everything was very clean and well maintained. The pools were decent and provided a welcome way to cool off, when they weren't temporarily closed for hygiene-related issues. I do wish there had been more shade around the pool area, such as umbrellas or covered seating. Because one of the pools was closed multiple times during our stay, everyone crowded into the remaining pool. It became too crowded for us to want to get in, and there wasn't enough shaded seating for parents who simply wanted to watch their kids swim. Ultimately, after two nights of miserable sleeping conditions, we decided to cut our stay short and move to a hotel. The staff were very understanding and apologetic about our experience. They refunded the unused nights without hesitation, and I was genuinely grateful for that level of customer service. Overall, if you're an avid camper who doesn't mind dealing with the elements, or if you're traveling in an RV, this is likely a great campground. As for us, we learned an important lesson the hard way: we're just not campers.
