The staff went above and beyond to make my littles feel comfortable. One night there was a spider (that’s what time in nature brings!) above our porch swing and they helped remove it. They were so kind about it. The activities at the camp were also a blast!

The nearest bathroom to our cabin was disgusting! Toilet paper all over the floor, wet toilet paper chunks, dirty toilets, trash was over flowing and soap dispensers gone and dirty bandaids and wrappers all over the floor. The kids sand bags for the rock mining station are smaller now and in plastic bags. So disappointing and same price. Dog hair all over floor of our cabin and dust.

It was great until a freak accident happened and my son managed to lock us out of our truck. It was 100% our fault and we are adults and can handle the situation. But the lack of support from the campground was upsetting. It felt like we were all alone.

Beautiful place

We have been coming to this KOA for 25 years. We were disappointed this time with the cleanliness of the Cabin. We walked in and it smelt like a dead animal. Opened the windows and they were full of dead bugs. The floor felt like it was going to cave in by the door. Clock, no batteries. AC cover kept falling off, not used. Cabins aren't cheap, have always had cleaner cabins in the past.

had car trouble and had to switch from a tent site to a cabin and they wouldn't refund our deposit for the tent site. We also stayed at the devils tower koa and switched from a tent site to a cabin and they refunded our deposit on the tent site unlike the koa at palmers gulch which didn't refund our deposit for the tent ,so we will not be staying at the palmers gulch koa. we will find another koa

The staff and the campground are completely amazing. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful.

Bathrooms were very very dirty. I do not think they were cleaned all weekend. We were in a camping cabin which was pleasant but it was very dirty as well.

the best place!

Several animals under our cabin fighting all night and keeping us from sleeping

Beautiful campground, convenient location. We rented a deluxe cabin & had 4 people for 4 days. Only a couple of complaints-we did not have potable water in our cabin. It was early in the season & the lines needed to be flushed. But nevertheless we shouldn't have to buy water to drink & to brush teeth. The other complaint is the office needs to be open longer hours.

We really enjoyed the deluxe cabin and all of its amenities.

Matress in camping cabin needs to be replaced, the mattress has certainly extended its lifespan. The cabin was not well maintained- it was dirty on arrival - and clear the cleaning crew do not clean under the mattresses. Better training for staff- anytime we asked a question none of the staff knew the answer ( said they were new). Water from spicket was awful- you could see the particles.

I was very disappointed that they didn’t offer any amenities while we were there. The restaurant wasn’t open the pizza place closed early and there was no food options available. They didn’t offer the breakfast that they usually offer even though there was people there they said it was too early in the year to start all that stuff. Would like to have had some food options at the resort.

Check in and out was very smooth. The deluxe cabin was very clean and had a great outdoor space. The resort is in a perfect locations for all near attractions, I would 100% recommend Mount Rushmore Palmer Gulch KOA!!

The only negative I have about this KOA was that being there May 12-16 the onsite bar/grill wasn’t open yet. The ice cream, coffee, bar/grill don’t open until Memorial weekend. I’m sure they’ve done their research and this works for them, me being selfish would’ve loved hitting up the bar/grill instead of driving into town. Over all you can tell it’s a nice facility w/ very clean restr

Loved our Cabin and its location. Fan Could have used a good dusting. Enjoyed our stay.

This campground is great if you have kids. But for adults, not so much. The Kamping Kabin we stayed in for 3 nights was the worst one of our 10 day trip. We stayed in 3 other Kabins and 3 other KOA's and they were far better. 75 % of the amenities were shut down as they were closing down for the winter. The showers/restrooms were located in the heart of the Pull-Throughs and NOT convenient.

Bathrooms are too far from the cabins, need some up on the hill.

Just wish we had been made aware that the food/pools/amenities would not be available during our stay
Sep 24, 2025
We have to say that you are probably the best KOA that we have ever stayed at, and we have stayed at quite a few of them. Your staff runs a great property

We love Palmer gulch and stay there at least once if not 2 or 3 times a season. However this time was disappointing. Instead of our rv we stayed in. D203 cabin.it was the end of the season but it just needs attention. None of the blinds would open properly. Curtains were missing in the loft. the air conditioner in the bottom was very gross and dirty...lights were burnt out etc. for the price disap

$9 for 5 small logs of firewood with no return policy if not unbundled is insane Super nice place, but also expensive and customer service is slipping.
Sep 20, 2025
When we arrived we found out that our deluxe cabin that’s supposed to sleep eight, does not. The loft was more like a crawl space with two thin mattresses on the floor. Our stove had an out of order sign on it, the next day the sign was gone, no explanation from the campground, but still didn’t work. 2 windows with no screens. We called and was told someone would bring them. Never got them

This is our 3rd visit here and it’s always great. We usually stay during the summer so it would have been nice to know that the pizza and restaurant was already closed for the season. I think that could be better advertised but we adjusted. Also, some hooks in the restroom would be good to hang things after showering. Overall, a great stay.

Beautiful location & enjoyed the end of season camping. We have stayed here numerous times. The swim pool bathroom was closest to us & was like entering a jungle. We battled mosquitoes, spiders, & flies every time because no effort was made to eradicate them. A pair of kids underwear was on the men’s room floor the entire 3 days we were there. Staff was certainly ready for the season to end.

We come every year to stay at Palmer Gulch and it never disappoints. The grounds are incredibly well maintained, the cabin felt clean, and we enjoyed everything immensely.

Beautiful campground! Friendly staff! We stayed in a deluxe cabin. Plenty of room and very clean. The playgrounds were great too! Fun for older kids. Perfect location to visit all the sights that part of South Dakota has to go offer.

bed was very uncomfortable and the door did not seal correctly while allow cold air to enter

Was wonderful. Only thing I would suggest is putting screen doors on the cabins.

I was really bummed that the ice cream shop and coffee shop were closed for the season. Seems like they should stay open on weekends at least in sept. There was plenty of people camping on the weekend. Also the shower in our cabin had dark hairs in it. And the floor boards right in inside our front door of our cabin were so soggy and rotten it felt like you could fall through them!

Our 2nd time at this KOA. Last year was amazing. This year we arrived on 9/3. A lot of things were closed for the season and seemed like most workers did not want to be there. Complete 180 from last year. Not enjoyable. I understand the season ends on Labor Day, but don’tfeel like it was clearly communicated that events like pancake breakfast would not be offered. Nobody seemed to want to

Shop was expensive, everything shut down after Labor Day. Doesn't participate in the Sept 5th free night of camping. I would not have booked this KOA if I knew. Cabin was nice though.

Cabin was dirty and beds were very hard. The bathrooms by the pool were disgusting. I expected more for the kind of money we paid for the resort. Cleanliness was not a priority for staff and it showed.

Awesome place. The only issue was with the hot tub at the old pool. Needs a stronger filter

We stayed in a deluxe cabin with 2 adults, 2 teen boys and 2 tween girls & it was even better than expected. We've stayed at property (tent) before & knew we loved it but it was somehow even better than we remembered. The cabin was more like a small house, while bathroom/kitchen seating was tight, there was plenty of space and fun things to do! Wished we'd stayed an extra day to spend just at KOA!
Aug 31, 2025
The cabin was great but just a little smaller than what I thought the picture showed. The mattress on the futon was terrible. The employees were very helpful and friendly. The service at the restaurant was OK but not the greatest. However it is a great place to stay so that a person could do a lot of attractions.

My husband and I were looking forward to spending our 30th anniversary at Palmer Gulch KOA where we honeymooned in 1985. Palmer Gulch was our special place. My husband David Lauseng passed away on Aug. 7. I called to cancel our August reservation but was one day outside of their cancellation window and Palmer Gulch refused to reimburse our deposit. Shameful! Nancy Lauseng 763-772-5822

Overall, decent stay. A lot of fun things to do- horses were our favorite. Unfortunately, the pool near the lodge was always full and we could never get on the pickleball court, like we wanted. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and not once was our room cleaned up- I did not know until the last day that they don't come in the rooms without a request- this needs to be communicated at check-in (a family of four- there were towels piling up on the floor and would've been nice to have our trash taken out, plus we had to go to the desk to ask for toiletries and fresh towels). The lodge has very limited breakfast items (just cereals, muffins, yogurt, etc); would've been nice to have a free hot meal. TV didn't work for 3-4 days (offered very low compensation for this). While the front desk was overall helpful, there were times they could get snarky/short. Would've loved a fitness center/gym offered. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in shower was good. Room on arrival was clean. Would come again.

We planned our vacation to the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort based on a recommendation from a friend. Since we aren't campers, we opted for a camping cabin, thinking it would be a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The website notes that the cabins do not have air conditioning, but it also suggests that it's not needed because temperatures cool off significantly at night. While that may be true under normal circumstances, it wasn't our experience. We visited during a stretch of upper-90-degree temperatures, and our cabin received direct sunlight for most of the day. Because of the cabin's location and window configuration, there was very little airflow. We ran three fans 24 hours a day and kept the front door open whenever we were at the site, yet the cabin didn't reach a reasonably comfortable temperature until after 1:00 a.m. each night. In addition to the heat, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The mattresses were so firm that we may as well have been sleeping on the ground in a tent. The bottom bunk was especially difficult to use. There was very little clearance, making it hard to crawl in, roll over, or get out. I hit my head multiple times throughout the night. While the camping cabin was not a good fit for us, the resort itself was nice. The property is very large, but they also pack a lot of campsites into the available space. Our cabin site included a picnic table and fire ring, but there wasn't much additional room. We're used to having space to spread out, set up a grill, toss a ball around, and relax, and that wasn't really possible at our site. The bathrooms appeared to be recently renovated. The shower stalls were somewhat small and the water pressure could have been better, but everything was very clean and well maintained. The pools were decent and provided a welcome way to cool off, when they weren't temporarily closed for hygiene-related issues. I do wish there had been more shade around the pool area, such as umbrellas or covered seating. Because one of the pools was closed multiple times during our stay, everyone crowded into the remaining pool. It became too crowded for us to want to get in, and there wasn't enough shaded seating for parents who simply wanted to watch their kids swim. Ultimately, after two nights of miserable sleeping conditions, we decided to cut our stay short and move to a hotel. The staff were very understanding and apologetic about our experience. They refunded the unused nights without hesitation, and I was genuinely grateful for that level of customer service. Overall, if you're an avid camper who doesn't mind dealing with the elements, or if you're traveling in an RV, this is likely a great campground. As for us, we learned an important lesson the hard way: we're just not campers.
