Our stay was very enjoyable. The grandkids had a ball! Our only complaint was that the wifi and cell service hardly worked at all! We understand the topography has a lot to do with that but we relied on the “wifi included” and had to resort to some extra efforts ( leaving the park) as needed. Other than that KOA at Palmer Gulch was great!!

There is bedlam at check in. For the price and location, I expected the sites to be paved. But they were not, and we had rain. And mud. Lots of mud. The sites are very close together. This location offers many activities for travelers with kids, but our kids are grown and we won't be back here. Seems lots of people bring their kids here to let them run and ride around unsupervised.

Amazing staff and facilities as always. We will always come back!

The trap house restaurant employees need training. This was the worst ran restaurant I’ve ever been too.

We love staying at pulmer Gulch. The kids always have a blast and we enjoyed all the extra activities they have. The pools are well maintained. This year the bathrooms need some maintenance things were broken. My brother in law did have an unfriendly encounter with a night watch employee 6/26 about the way he was parked. That was a bummer. The employees at the horse rides were a little unkind.

Our first impression was “wow!”. The campground is huge, situated within a beautiful landscape in the black hills and has so many fun activities to offer for kids. We really enjoyed our stay there. Everything was well maintained, the RV site was great, staff was super helpful and friendly. The kids were disappointed we only stayed 2 nights. We would absolutely recommend this campground!

Loved the kids zone for my 15 year old. She said we will be back next. Ps bring your own scooters or bikes. We loved it here

Huge KOA! Lots of activities for everyone. Very friendly staff, very clean park.
Jun 28, 2026
Everything was clean and amenities were great. However, for longer stays, you should offer a discounted rate. Stay 3 nights, get a forth free or half off. We stayed 6 and paid full price + resort fees. That adds up to be quite a bit.

No-existent WiFi

Campground amenities are great, but most campsites are quite small compared to other KOA campgrounds we’ve stayed at.

Great, family-friendly campground in a fantastic location. We loved being within a 10 minute drive of Mount Rushmore, with Custer State Park and many small towns nearby! The Stables at Palmer Gulch were a HUGE bonus so we could pet the horses every day. The facilities were cleaned regularly throughout the day and there are a variety of daily and scheduled activities, plus the Mount Rushmore rodeo!

This is by far the best campground in the United States for kids and parents. It is a generational staple in our family! 7 times with our kids and this trip was from Florida! see you again.

We think the camp sites are a little to close to one and other. We did enjoy the extra activities available at the park. The restroom near the coffee shop needs to be cleaned more frequently . Great location

Top notch KOA. Close to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

We love this campground!

Great RV Park and location close to all adventures. Campsites, amenities and facilities were excellent and well maintained. Would have been a 5 Star Rating if it wasn’t for having “Wet Firewood”delivered by staff to our site.

Beautiful campground, great amenities! Nice clean restrooms!

Everything was fantastic- cannot wait to come back - cabin was great - just the mattresses were quite poor - please fix those

What a wonderful place to stay.
Jun 27, 2026
The location in the Black Hills was perfect for all of the activities and sights we wanted to see. There were plenty of activities for our kids. The entire property was clean and well maintained.

Tent camping stay was not enjoyable. Goose poop everywhere(this could be mentioned at booking as a possibility). There needs to be a path to the bathrooms between camper sites so you don't have to walk all the way around. Quiet hours were not enforced. People would walk into our campsite to fish. Sites were not clearly defined so others were constantly using our table, space, etc.

Amazing! Beautiful, clean and inclusive. Something for my kiddos (14, 12 and 6) to do all the time. The costs for on site souvenirs, coffee and food, everyday items wasn't crazy. We decided day one we were going to stay an extra day and that was accommodated too. All the staff is friendly and never seemed irritated with their job. We will be back! Thank you for an unforgettable vacation

Over priced, crowded and FILTHY! We stayed for two nights and comfort station number 4 never had paper towels in the restroom! It was so dirty the entire time! Very disappointed in this KOA! Like I said on my other reviews bigger does not always mean better and this was definitely the case for this KOA.

Fantanstic stay - Cannot wait to come back. Only feedback is the mattresses in the cabin are quite poor. Could use a couple more hooks to hang towels - otherwise, perfect and such good memories.

The overall stay there was great as first time RV rental and first time using KOA resort. Should have planned better the drive distance to this location and the route to Mt Rushmore need to say 16 highway is the route RV s need to take and this was my only hook up. I got there late at midnight and I had to come the back way in, but by the grace of God and Wife and both our military land naviga we

This KOA has continued to grow and offer so much for anyone staying at the resort! The only complaint we have about our stay is that the WiFi did not work well at all. We could hardly load an email with the internet.
Jun 27, 2026
We were only there for one night but would have stayed much longer if we could have. The amenities are abundant, the bathrooms very clean, food was amazing and overall had an amazing experience.

Wonderful stay from the moment we arrived. Friendly staff and everything was clean. Great location and views to boot!

Great staff and activities

Cleanest campground I've ever stayed at.

The good. Great campground for families. Tons of activities. On site horses to ride. Nice store. The bad. The grave in the roads and lots are lacking upkeep. Many lots have mud holes where most RVs steps are situated. The sites are not as long as expected. Our reservation was for 58 feet which was verified at check-in. I has at least 2 feet of overhang on each end into the roads. Many others same

This resort has it all! It's a great destination campground for families and their kids. So much to do to entertain everyone. The Chuck Wagon Super was special! The only drawback was the amount of people staying there, but it is a resort, so it wasn't a surprise. A suggestion would be to include another K9 park. The one that exists is off by the rodeo stands which can be a hike. Thanks!

This place is like a little city! Everything you need and more is there. I loved eating fresh hot pizza, listening to live music while doing my laundry! The bathrooms were amazing, roomy , clean and private. The gift shop was huge, the tours were several to choose from and it included horse trail rides. The sites were all shady and clean, A really fun place you stay all week!

First time experiencing a KOA that had everything possible a camper could want—I’ll be bringing my family here next year
Jun 25, 2026
We loved our stay! So much to do right on site. The playground, heated pool and mini golf were our favorites. The door in K50 doesn’t open all the way which can make taking things in and out a little tricky but no major issues!
Jun 25, 2026
We stayed in a deluxe cabin and it was amazing bed was comfortable kids had a blast we rented a golf cart and that was awesome the views there and how everything was there if your forgot something they had it and they were all so nice and helpful with whatever was needed we will definitely be coming back

Amenities were excellent, but crowded and tight campsites. The section we were in was difficult to get into and campsites were not level. No space between sites and were all on a slope. Bathrooms were cleaned at a very inconvenient time.
Jun 25, 2026
We loved our stay here. Even though it rained almost the entire time, the pool was still enjoyable, there was so much for the kids to do and the staff was so friendly.

Paid $162 for a premium site #301 , the most I ever paid for a KOA site and my neighbour was 5 feet away if that You got everything there and more this is probably why it is so expensive We are now staying at Mitchell KOA For $100 you get a real premium site

Our stay was fantastic. Incredibly clean, exceptionally well maintained. Sight was large, easy to navigate our toy hauler. So many fun activities for the grandchildren. They loved it!!!! We loved it!!!! We will surely be back.

This was our first stay at a KOA and we were thoroughly impressed by the grounds, facilities and activities!

Wow! This was an outstanding campground! Has so much for the kids and adults! Beautiful facilities! We will be back!

Stayed turning thunder storms and still had fun

The campground is beautiful. The pull-through sites can be a bit tight for space before the next pull through. If I were to go back, I'd pick a back-in. Wifi was functional all through campground from what I could tell.

This is, by far, the nicest and best appointed KOA I’ve ever stayed at. The grounds were beautiful and there were numerous activites. The staff was great! They were helpful, friendly, and constantly working to keep the campground tidy. The showers were clean and I love the individual shower rooms with locking doors- no worries about privacy! It’s a design I wish more campgrounds used!

Overall, decent stay. A lot of fun things to do- horses were our favorite. Unfortunately, the pool near the lodge was always full and we could never get on the pickleball court, like we wanted. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and not once was our room cleaned up- I did not know until the last day that they don't come in the rooms without a request- this needs to be communicated at check-in (a family of four- there were towels piling up on the floor and would've been nice to have our trash taken out, plus we had to go to the desk to ask for toiletries and fresh towels). The lodge has very limited breakfast items (just cereals, muffins, yogurt, etc); would've been nice to have a free hot meal. TV didn't work for 3-4 days (offered very low compensation for this). While the front desk was overall helpful, there were times they could get snarky/short. Would've loved a fitness center/gym offered. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in shower was good. Room on arrival was clean. Would come again.

We planned our vacation to the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort based on a recommendation from a friend. Since we aren't campers, we opted for a camping cabin, thinking it would be a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The website notes that the cabins do not have air conditioning, but it also suggests that it's not needed because temperatures cool off significantly at night. While that may be true under normal circumstances, it wasn't our experience. We visited during a stretch of upper-90-degree temperatures, and our cabin received direct sunlight for most of the day. Because of the cabin's location and window configuration, there was very little airflow. We ran three fans 24 hours a day and kept the front door open whenever we were at the site, yet the cabin didn't reach a reasonably comfortable temperature until after 1:00 a.m. each night. In addition to the heat, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The mattresses were so firm that we may as well have been sleeping on the ground in a tent. The bottom bunk was especially difficult to use. There was very little clearance, making it hard to crawl in, roll over, or get out. I hit my head multiple times throughout the night. While the camping cabin was not a good fit for us, the resort itself was nice. The property is very large, but they also pack a lot of campsites into the available space. Our cabin site included a picnic table and fire ring, but there wasn't much additional room. We're used to having space to spread out, set up a grill, toss a ball around, and relax, and that wasn't really possible at our site. The bathrooms appeared to be recently renovated. The shower stalls were somewhat small and the water pressure could have been better, but everything was very clean and well maintained. The pools were decent and provided a welcome way to cool off, when they weren't temporarily closed for hygiene-related issues. I do wish there had been more shade around the pool area, such as umbrellas or covered seating. Because one of the pools was closed multiple times during our stay, everyone crowded into the remaining pool. It became too crowded for us to want to get in, and there wasn't enough shaded seating for parents who simply wanted to watch their kids swim. Ultimately, after two nights of miserable sleeping conditions, we decided to cut our stay short and move to a hotel. The staff were very understanding and apologetic about our experience. They refunded the unused nights without hesitation, and I was genuinely grateful for that level of customer service. Overall, if you're an avid camper who doesn't mind dealing with the elements, or if you're traveling in an RV, this is likely a great campground. As for us, we learned an important lesson the hard way: we're just not campers.
