There is very little shade in the camping area. There was only one person working the reception desk who also had to take payment for things bought at the store. Only 1 laundry was open and half the dryers were out of order. Most of the activities were already shut doen. Is was a very overpriced stay for the value received.

This place has so much to offer! Everything from Kids entertainment to rental cars!! We were there late September so many of the seasonal activities were closed but it still had plenty to do. The location is perfect!!! Close to all the tourist spots with a short drive to Deadwood and Sturgis.

Nice campground, located a short distance from Mt. Rushmore, Needles drive, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Monument. Very clean facility, bath houses very clean and nice. Staff friendly and helpful. Would like to see more pavement, lots of gravel roads and campsites, more pavement would keep things a little cleaner.

We have frequently stayed at this KOA. Very kid friendly, lots of activities. Very clean. Lots of grass for dogs to walk leashed. This is the second largest KOA with lots of sites and very busy. Super small sites. Better WiFi would help improve the experience. Don’t expect cell service or WiFi.

All good except WiFi is horrible. For the price they should have the best internet available

We loved how convenient the location was to everything we wanted to do while there! Hope to come back with our kids and grandkids! Your amenities are awesome!

This campground is a great base for visiting Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area. However, I was disappointed that most amenities were already closed by mid-September. It would have been helpful if the website had mentioned this seasonal change.

Great stay. Loved the campsite and views. We wish the restaurant and other amenities were still open. We were looking forward to dinner and few beers at the restaurant.

Excellent campground. Great staff and all around a wonderful place to stay.

We arrived the middle of September so most of the amenities were shut down. We would live to go back and enjoy everything they have to offer. It is a beautiful campground.

Just wish we had been made aware that the food/pools/amenities would not be available during our stay

Essentially there is no dog park, it was filthy with old feces and the gates do not close, no latches. Not maintained, health hazard for humans and dogs. Amenities are seasonal? No dates are given. Most were closed.

We have to say that you are probably the best KOA that we have ever stayed at, and we have stayed at quite a few of them. Your staff runs a great property

I have lost count of how many times I have stayed here. I have loved it every time. The staff is always super helpful and friendly. The campground is probably the most well organized, clean and relaxing campground I have ever stayed at. The on site rental cars have been helpful a couple of times. The on site UTV rentals are a ton of fun and super convenient as is all the other activities.

Beautiful (huge) campground. Glad we stayed as base camp for exploring the badlands, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer park and needles Highway.

We didn’t realize until we got there that some of the amenities were not available

We stayed after labor day so many of the amenities were closed, but we enjoyed the stay in the rv campground so much! We traveled with 2 other couples, one stayed in a cabin and one in the lodge...the golf cart made it so easy for us to meet up! The grounds were clean, asthetically pleasing and the staff was A+! Will come again when things are open!

Had a great spot and great time

We love Palmer gulch and stay there at least once if not 2 or 3 times a season. However this time was disappointing. Instead of our rv we stayed in. D203 cabin.it was the end of the season but it just needs attention. None of the blinds would open properly. Curtains were missing in the loft. the air conditioner in the bottom was very gross and dirty...lights were burnt out etc. for the price disap

Had a wonderful time here. Our spot was large and level. Staff was very friendly. Views are beautiful. Lots of amenities but sadly many were closed for off season. Would be nice if they had a dog park.

This is a great central location for the Black Hills. Stayed here 20 years ago and it’s just as nice now as back then. We are here during off season this time so the park activities are closed. Check this park out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. One of the best!

Clean restrooms, location! Location! Location! Wonderful park and friendly and helpful staff.

Wonderful location to all the things you would come to South Dakota to see. We were about a 10 minute drive from Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park was an easy drive to do the Needles Highway. Staff was very helpful and facilities were well maintained.

Our kids love this place. Lots of playgrounds and activities for them to enjoy. A little bummed that one of the pools weren't open since it was a warm weekend. I definitely do not understand why the bathrooms are cleaned at 8:00 in the morning when they are likely the most used. That was frustrating and seems like another hour later would have been better

great grounds and customer service

$9 for 5 small logs of firewood with no return policy if not unbundled is insane Super nice place, but also expensive and customer service is slipping.
Sep 22, 2025
Lots of amenities and friendly staff. However, sites were very close to each other and the fire pit locations were very poorly placed and too close to RVs. There wasn’t enough room for vehicle parking on many of the pull through sites.

Nice place, clean, friendly, easy access

We had a great time at this resort! The sites are a little close but the surrounding views make up for it! Staff was proffesional and courteous. Showers were clean, but most lacked benches. We hope to stay here again.

Really wished there had been wifi available. It was a great stay though. Dining should be open until October 1st.

Overall, decent stay. A lot of fun things to do- horses were our favorite. Unfortunately, the pool near the lodge was always full and we could never get on the pickleball court, like we wanted. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and not once was our room cleaned up- I did not know until the last day that they don't come in the rooms without a request- this needs to be communicated at check-in (a family of four- there were towels piling up on the floor and would've been nice to have our trash taken out, plus we had to go to the desk to ask for toiletries and fresh towels). The lodge has very limited breakfast items (just cereals, muffins, yogurt, etc); would've been nice to have a free hot meal. TV didn't work for 3-4 days (offered very low compensation for this). While the front desk was overall helpful, there were times they could get snarky/short. Would've loved a fitness center/gym offered. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in shower was good. Room on arrival was clean. Would come again.

We planned our vacation to the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort based on a recommendation from a friend. Since we aren't campers, we opted for a camping cabin, thinking it would be a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The website notes that the cabins do not have air conditioning, but it also suggests that it's not needed because temperatures cool off significantly at night. While that may be true under normal circumstances, it wasn't our experience. We visited during a stretch of upper-90-degree temperatures, and our cabin received direct sunlight for most of the day. Because of the cabin's location and window configuration, there was very little airflow. We ran three fans 24 hours a day and kept the front door open whenever we were at the site, yet the cabin didn't reach a reasonably comfortable temperature until after 1:00 a.m. each night. In addition to the heat, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The mattresses were so firm that we may as well have been sleeping on the ground in a tent. The bottom bunk was especially difficult to use. There was very little clearance, making it hard to crawl in, roll over, or get out. I hit my head multiple times throughout the night. While the camping cabin was not a good fit for us, the resort itself was nice. The property is very large, but they also pack a lot of campsites into the available space. Our cabin site included a picnic table and fire ring, but there wasn't much additional room. We're used to having space to spread out, set up a grill, toss a ball around, and relax, and that wasn't really possible at our site. The bathrooms appeared to be recently renovated. The shower stalls were somewhat small and the water pressure could have been better, but everything was very clean and well maintained. The pools were decent and provided a welcome way to cool off, when they weren't temporarily closed for hygiene-related issues. I do wish there had been more shade around the pool area, such as umbrellas or covered seating. Because one of the pools was closed multiple times during our stay, everyone crowded into the remaining pool. It became too crowded for us to want to get in, and there wasn't enough shaded seating for parents who simply wanted to watch their kids swim. Ultimately, after two nights of miserable sleeping conditions, we decided to cut our stay short and move to a hotel. The staff were very understanding and apologetic about our experience. They refunded the unused nights without hesitation, and I was genuinely grateful for that level of customer service. Overall, if you're an avid camper who doesn't mind dealing with the elements, or if you're traveling in an RV, this is likely a great campground. As for us, we learned an important lesson the hard way: we're just not campers.
