Campground Reviews

This campground is great if you have kids. But for adults, not so much. The Kamping Kabin we stayed in for 3 nights was the worst one of our 10 day trip. We stayed in 3 other Kabins and 3 other KOA's and they were far better. 75 % of the amenities were shut down as they were closing down for the winter. The showers/restrooms were located in the heart of the Pull-Throughs and NOT convenient.

This is a very nice park. The reason I did not give a 5 or 10 is because we came late September and the majority of the amenities were closed. I had to dig through the website to figure out what was open or closed. Would have been nice if in the welcome email/text it would have stated which facilities were closed.

Considering it was literally the last day of your season and everything was closed everyone was still very cooperative and friendly, and we will not hesitate to return

Nice clean facilities, friendly staff and an awesome location!

10 Stars! Location is extraordinary! Casey, Herb, and crew of maintenance went above and beyond with a battery issue on my vehicle! The closest camping to Mount Rushmore with a location of majestic beauty.

The sites are tight for anything over 30 feet. We got our 44 foot camper in but the place was closing in 2 days and we were able to park in a different spot . The staff is great and worked with us.

Probably the largest and one of the nicest KOA’s I’ve stayed in but only 5 washing machines available for the 100’s of campers.

Great facility! No cell phone service!!! We won't be back or recommend this KOA because of this issue!

Staff great and efficient! Resort well equipped!

The campground is beautiful and well maintained. Bathrooms and showers were probably one of the best I’ve ever seen. My only real complaint is that it was still so busy in that campground that I felt all the little stores and restaurants should have still been open for last 2 weeks you are open. Was excited to get wine, coffee and ice cream at the shops and a meal at the taproom.

We had a great time, bathrooms are clean and showers as well. The price of fire wood is high. We felt safe at all times. It’s unfortunate that everything was closed, we would have liked to try some of the amenities while we were there.

The season was winding down so the campground was very quiet. Very close to Mount Rushmore. Enjoyed our stay.

We had a great visit. Wonderful park, with great staff support.

Beautiful campground and area. The office staff was helpful with other staff working around the campground keeping it well kept. The only drawback was the size of the spots. Even though we stated the size of our camper, we completely filled our assigned spot leaving no room for our dually pickup! Our neighbors were disappointed as well. We had to confer schedules to accommodate coming and going.

Such a pretty site. The showers are very nice, the bathroom situation was great and comfortable. Beautiful campground.

Beautiful resort!

Bathrooms are too far from the cabins, need some up on the hill.

Many of the amenities were closed. The sites were tight and we had a patio site. The trees over our fifth wheel need to be trimmed as leaves were on top of our trailer. There are not enough laundry options. With the size of the park there should be more than one and all the machines should work. We would not stay again.

Beautiful park with great spaces. We have already booked our next trip!

It was a pretty grand koa, great for families. We are retired so probably prefer a state park.

Well. the sight was too small to park the trailer with my motor home. I requsted a sight for this on the reservation. No one explained to where to park the trailer either. We had to figure it out on our own. The stay was good everything worked well. Bath rooms were clean. Only concern is the bath room doors were left open most of the time allowing bugs to get in. Lots of flies.

When I made the reservations I was told almost every amenity would be open until Oct 1st. Upon arrival, no amenities were open. Other campers told us they were told the same thing. The showers did not get “cleaned periodically throughout the day” they were not cleaned at all during our stay. Rate was very high given it was end of season, no amenities, and no cleaning.

Facilities were nice but many restrooms were closed despite area being full of campers so long walks to find open facilities. Sites were much smaller then advertised and vehicles needed to be parked sideways to fit in site. Unable to camp next to fellow travelers without additional fees. Other campgrounds on our trip were much more accommodating for this and did not charge.

It is a great facility, great staff and location. But they were so full we could not get in a day earlier, they were nearly full again when we departed, but they were closing bathrooms and showers already. I understanding having to winterize, but the bathrooms and showers should be the last thing to close.

It was a good place to stay but disappointed there were no receptacles for recycling.

Conveniently located for travel to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, and Custer Wildlife loop. Pleasant location, cell signal was pretty bad. Sign in concierge was very pleasant. We had an enjoyable stay.

Wish that the food services were open since the park was nearly full and would support amenities.

Very well maintained and large well stocked store. I would have appreciated knowing everything else was closed for the season prior to arriving.

Overall, decent stay. A lot of fun things to do- horses were our favorite. Unfortunately, the pool near the lodge was always full and we could never get on the pickleball court, like we wanted. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and not once was our room cleaned up- I did not know until the last day that they don't come in the rooms without a request- this needs to be communicated at check-in (a family of four- there were towels piling up on the floor and would've been nice to have our trash taken out, plus we had to go to the desk to ask for toiletries and fresh towels). The lodge has very limited breakfast items (just cereals, muffins, yogurt, etc); would've been nice to have a free hot meal. TV didn't work for 3-4 days (offered very low compensation for this). While the front desk was overall helpful, there were times they could get snarky/short. Would've loved a fitness center/gym offered. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in shower was good. Room on arrival was clean. Would come again.

We planned our vacation to the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort based on a recommendation from a friend. Since we aren't campers, we opted for a camping cabin, thinking it would be a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The website notes that the cabins do not have air conditioning, but it also suggests that it's not needed because temperatures cool off significantly at night. While that may be true under normal circumstances, it wasn't our experience. We visited during a stretch of upper-90-degree temperatures, and our cabin received direct sunlight for most of the day. Because of the cabin's location and window configuration, there was very little airflow. We ran three fans 24 hours a day and kept the front door open whenever we were at the site, yet the cabin didn't reach a reasonably comfortable temperature until after 1:00 a.m. each night. In addition to the heat, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The mattresses were so firm that we may as well have been sleeping on the ground in a tent. The bottom bunk was especially difficult to use. There was very little clearance, making it hard to crawl in, roll over, or get out. I hit my head multiple times throughout the night. While the camping cabin was not a good fit for us, the resort itself was nice. The property is very large, but they also pack a lot of campsites into the available space. Our cabin site included a picnic table and fire ring, but there wasn't much additional room. We're used to having space to spread out, set up a grill, toss a ball around, and relax, and that wasn't really possible at our site. The bathrooms appeared to be recently renovated. The shower stalls were somewhat small and the water pressure could have been better, but everything was very clean and well maintained. The pools were decent and provided a welcome way to cool off, when they weren't temporarily closed for hygiene-related issues. I do wish there had been more shade around the pool area, such as umbrellas or covered seating. Because one of the pools was closed multiple times during our stay, everyone crowded into the remaining pool. It became too crowded for us to want to get in, and there wasn't enough shaded seating for parents who simply wanted to watch their kids swim. Ultimately, after two nights of miserable sleeping conditions, we decided to cut our stay short and move to a hotel. The staff were very understanding and apologetic about our experience. They refunded the unused nights without hesitation, and I was genuinely grateful for that level of customer service. Overall, if you're an avid camper who doesn't mind dealing with the elements, or if you're traveling in an RV, this is likely a great campground. As for us, we learned an important lesson the hard way: we're just not campers.
