This easy-to-make breakfast has all the flavors of fall. Rich salted caramel and tender apples make this the perfect fall French toast.
Salted Caramel Apple French Toast
Ingredients
- 2 Honeycrisp apples, sliced
- ¼ cup caramel sauce
- ½ tsp flaky sea salt, such as Maldon
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie or apple pie spice
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup caramel sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp pumpkin pie or apple pie spice
- 8 slices (1/2 to ¾-inch) sliced rustic sourdough or French bread
- For serving: additional caramel sauce, toasted salted pecans, sour cream or crème fraiche, maple syrup, optional
Directions
- Preheat grill set with a griddle pan to medium-high.
- Stack two 12-inch sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil on work surface. Add apples, ¼ cup caramel sauce, sea salt and pie spice and mix to combine. Dot with butter and wrap in foil.
- Add apple packet to grill.
- Whisk together milk, eggs, ¼ cup caramel sauce, salt, vanilla and pie spice in a bowl. Dip bread into milk mixture and add to buttered griddle, cooking each slice until golden brown on both sides. Repeat until all bread has been dipped and cooked.
- To serve, arrange 2 slices per person on plates and top with apples, caramel sauce, toasted pecans and a dollop of sour cream or crème fraiche.
- Serves 4.
