A New Hanover County tradition since 2005, guests from around the world have visited Airlie Gardens from Thanksgiving to Christmas to take in the sparkling sights and festive sounds of the season. Guests will experience a 0.5m stroll through the Gardens, on a self-guided walking tour while feasting their eyes on a spectacular array of lights and holiday displays. Celebrate the holidays coastal-style at the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla. Voted a Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Top 20 Event, this celebration kicks off Friday night with the Anchor's Away Launch Party. The event is open to the public and includes dinner, a cash bar, live music and a silent auction. The fun continues Saturday with the Festival in the Park featuring over 100 arts and craft vendors, an antique car show, a large play area for children with several inflatables, the always popular Arab Choo Choo, festival food and more. The lighted boat parade begins at 6:00 pm and is followed by a spectacular fireworks show. Don't forget to vote via text for both the "People's Choice" and "Crowd Favorite" awards once the parade starts.

The New Year's Celebration is always held on New Year's Eve and begins at 9 PM. The location rotates between Carolina & Kure Beaches. Don't miss the giant beach ball being dropped at midnight followed by a spectacular fireworks demonstration.
This free family-friendly event will feature a DJ and dancing with refreshments and party favors available for purchase.

The 16th Annual Dolphin Dip Extravaganza in Surf City, NC, proceeds benefit Share the Table. The event features thousands of folks braving the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, plus a costume contest, and more.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site and Battlefield in Kure Beach and the Friends of Fort Fisher host the 153rd Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher. The weekend features hundreds of reenactors representing Union and Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines realistically depicting everything from camp life to battle strategies.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day has special resonance to Wilmingtonians because (among other reasons) Dr. King was scheduled to travel to Wilmington for a speaking engagement on the day he was assassinated. Enjoy the Annual Polar Plunge along with the 5K Run-N-Plunge at Kure Beach! With the annual 5K Run-N-Plunge, shivering plungers brave cold conditions and dive into the chilly Atlantic Ocean after completing a 5K winding through the beach. Contestants are encouraged to dress up and find their inner superhero! There will be a pre-race auction, a costume contest, food and of course the plunge at the end of the race. Contestants can opt for the 5K Run-N-Plunge, a 1-mile fun walk or just the plunge but no matter what you choose to participate in, the day is sure to leave you smiling!
Art for All, a unique and creative art show! With a peak elevation of only 32ft, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Wrightsville Beach Marathon Madness is fast, flat and notorious for personal bests. Combined with the huge bonus of the race being a Boston Marathon qualifying eventand an USATF certified qualifier, it's no surprise why this marathon attracts a healthy variety of runners—from first timers to veterans—and sells out fast.The 2017 Full Marathon will really give you a glimpse of what Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington offer. The new course starts at the beach and runs through Landfall and finishes at the UNCW Campus. Your families and friends will have the opportunity to see you in action five to eight times as you run, with the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway as your backdrop. The NCAA basketball tourney kicks off in March off as well, so we'll have college-themed cheer stations with DJs, bands and spectator hot spots.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival “Loop The Lake” Extended 5K/10K/1 Mile Fun Walk is an annual event hosted by the Cape Fear Volunteer Center. Kids, dogs, and costumes are welcome!All proceeds from this event benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center Big Buddy Program. Big Buddy is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches “at-risk” youth ages 6-16 in New Hanover County and Brunswick County with positive adult role models. Youth are identified as “at-risk” due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance, and lack of positive role models. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is a 501c3 and works to recruit and train volunteers, match volunteers with youth, offer support and guidance through case management, and provide monthly group activities.
April 18-22, 2018The 2018 West Marine Carolina Cup presented by SurfTech kicks off the race season with 5 courses: a kids race, the Harbor Island Recreational “fun” race, Money Island open race, 6 man outrigger race on Sunday and the renowned Graveyard Elite Race. This is our seventh year. In 2012, the Carolina Cup was the largest race on the East Coast with over 400 paddlers competing in the first day of races. In 2013, we had over 600. In 2014, there were over 700. The 2015 event was one of the most competitive events on record and also deemed the largest SUP event in the world. In 2016, the West Marine Carolina Cup grew even more attracting thousands of paddlers to Wrightsville Beach to come together on the East Coast.Expect clinics by the top paddle instructors and certifiers in the world.Bring the whole family for this amazing 5-day weekend.
