Spring is a beautiful time to explore the great outdoors, with blooming flowers, crisp fresh air, and the excitement of the new camping season. But with spring comes unpredictable weather—rain showers, morning dew, and damp conditions can make it challenging to keep your camper dry and cozy.
Whether you're camping in a travel trailer, RV, or pop-up camper, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are the best ways to keep your camper dry and comfortable during your next KOA adventure.
One of the easiest ways to avoid a soggy camper is to start with the right site. When booking a KOA campsite, look for spots on higher ground to avoid water pooling. If you're setting up in a tent or pop-up, avoid low-lying areas where rainwater collects. All of our KOA sites are well-maintained with gravel that help with drainage, but it’s always smart to check the forecast and the heavy rain fall can cause pooling.
Spring showers can roll in unexpectedly, so having an awning or tarp in place can be a game-changer. Extend your RV awning or set up a large tarp over your campsite to create a dry outdoor space for cooking, relaxing, or storing gear. Ensure your awning is sloped to allow rainwater to drain off rather than pooling on top. Also we do experience a bit of wind from time to time so be prepared to close your awnings when you go places -microbursts will destroy your awning.
Spring moisture can sneak in through small gaps around windows and doors. Inspect your camper’s seals and weather stripping before your trip and reapply caulking or sealant if needed. Even a tiny gap can let water in, leading to damp cushions and flooring.
Even when it’s rainy, keeping air flowing inside your camper is essential. Moisture from cooking, breathing, and wet gear can build up quickly, leading to condensation. Open a roof vent or crack a window slightly when possible to allow air circulation and prevent mold and mildew. All of our campsites have electrical hookups (except the tent sites), so using a small dehumidifier or fan can also help reduce moisture buildup.
One of the biggest culprits for tracking in water and mud is wet shoes and rain-soaked clothing. Set up a designated spot outside your camper for wet boots and rain gear. A plastic bin, boot tray, or small outdoor rug near your entrance can keep water from making its way inside.
If you’re camping in an area with high humidity, moisture absorbers like DampRid can help reduce dampness inside your camper. Place them in corners, under beds, and in cabinets to prevent mildew and musty odors.
Even with the best precautions, some moisture is inevitable. Having quick-drying microfiber towels handy can help you wipe down surfaces and windows if condensation builds up. Keep extra dry blankets stored in a plastic bin to swap out if bedding gets damp.
Spring storms can lead to unexpected water seeping into your camper, especially if you’re tent camping or using a pop-up. Store important items in plastic bins and keep them off the floor to avoid damage in case of leaks or unexpected puddles.
Springtime means muddy trails and wet grass, so placing an outdoor mat at your camper entrance can help keep dirt and moisture at bay. Our KOA sites have picnic tables and well-maintained gravel but a sturdy mat will keep your interior cleaner and drier.
Even if the rain comes, camping at KOA is always an adventure! Many KOA campgrounds offer indoor activities, and fun amenities like the rec hall and Kamper Kitchen where you can stay dry while still enjoying the camping experience.
Spring camping at KOA is a fantastic way to kick off the season, and with a little preparation, you can keep your camper dry and comfortable. Whether you're exploring nature trails, roasting marshmallows, or cozying up inside your RV, don’t let a little rain dampen your adventure.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
