Zombie Capital of the World

Zombie Capital of the World

Mercer-Grove City KOA offers a welcome respite in the western Pennsylvania countryside just one hour north of Pittsburgh. Also released in western Pennsylvania (maybe not so welcoming) were groundbreaking zombie film classics. Night of the Living Dead first set the tone for all zombie movies to follow. Dawn of the Dead was also filmed nearby at the world famous Monroeville Mall, which is also the home for The Living Dead Museum. Yes you heard it, there is a wonderful themed attraction dedicated to the undead. Marvel through displays of movie props, memorabilia, zombie figures, and an epic gift shop. Thanks to an awesome zombie loving camper, we were reminded that Day of the Dead was filmed in the Wampum Mines just of Route 18 in Lawrence County.

The perfect zombie-filled day would be a mini road trip to two film locations. Thirty-four miles away from the KOA is Evans City Cemetery. Next stop, continue 40 miles south and head to Monroeville Mall

Time your trip accordingly and celebrate zombies with Living Dead Weekends. Mark your calendar for the following 2023 dates: June 9-11 in Monroeville and October 20-22 in Evans City. Each event will feature guests from movies filmed here in Pittsburgh plus exhibits, movie locations tours, photo ops, exhibits, panels, and more! Snag your Living Dead Weekend tickets here and make your KOA reservations here.

The Living Dead Museum is located within the Monroeville Mall Upper Level (JC Penney court end of mall) at 248 Monroeville Mall Monroeville, PA 15146.

We hope you enjoyed this month's featured local attraction. We think it's pretty unique that Pittsburgh is considered the zombie capital of the world so we're delighted to share that with you. Stay creepy, campers!
