HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA hosted the 23rd Annual Boy Scout Jamboree over the weekend.
This year for the first time, some of those troops – are girls.
Over 50 troops from throughout the Northeast have made their way to Herkimer to participate in the jamboree.
The scouts are participating in a series of educational modules that will help meet their Geology Merit Badge requirements.
While there, they learned about mining, paleontology, and water conservation.
Of course, the scouts are hoping to come away with more than just Merit Badges.
“We’re looking to get rich.” Says Alesia Kennerson from troop 2019 in New Hartford, Connecticut.
Troop 2019 is one of those new troops comprised of young women.
“We’re looking to mine for diamonds and to just have fun. Whatever we do here is a good learning experience, but mostly we just want the kids to have fun.”
Following the mining activities, there was an awards ceremony, then all the scouts enjoyed an evening around the campfire.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
