Whether composing novels in his Whitehead Street writing studio or fishing for big game in local waters, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Ernest Hemingway left a powerful legacy in Key West. His zest for life, literary accomplishments and enduring affection for the island where he lived during the 1930s are to be commemorated Tuesday through Sunday, July 20-25, with the annual Hemingway Days festivities.Scores of stocky, bearded men resembling Ernest are to compete in the annual Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest -– an event that was not held in 2020 because of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. The 2021 competition is to be held July 22-24 at Sloppy Joe's Bar, 201 Duval St., a frequent hangout for the legendary writer during his Key West years.Sloppy Joe's also plans to stage the “Running of the Bulls,” a spoof of the famed Pamplona event featuring look-alikes and manmade bulls parading down Key West's Duval Street.
