Whether you are planning a summer getaway or an early fall escape, the sandy beaches of Florida may be calling your name. While this time of year is a great time to experience the Sunshine State, it is also hurricane season. Here is what to know about the weather before booking your vacation.
Florida's hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30 with activity peaking from mid-August to mid-October.
Hurricanes form when hot, moist air travels over warm tropical waters. As the warm air rises, it cools, and more warm air moves to replace it. These fluctuating temperatures cause winds and clouds to swirl into massive cyclones, which can make landfall, causing high winds, heavy rains and rapid flooding.
A tropical cyclone becomes a hurricane when the winds reach 74 miles per hour or higher. If the winds are 39 to 73 miles per hour, it is a tropical storm. Any tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 38 miles per hour or less is a tropical depression, and tropical disturbances are an area of organized convection with a diameter of 100 to 300 miles.
As you check the weather when planning your vacation and leading up to your trip, you will likely see a wide vocabulary of terms used, such as weather advisory and warning. A weather warning is when a dangerous weather event is very likely to occur and could cause damage to people and property. A weather advisory indicates less severe conditions than warnings but may still cause damage or inconvenience.
Some other weather terms you may hear include hurricane watch and hurricane warning. A hurricane watch is when a hurricane may threaten an area within 48 hours. Hurricane warnings are when a hurricane is expected in 36 hours or less.
It can be safe to travel to areas like Florida during hurricane season, but you want to be prepared. Even if a hurricane is not in the forecast during your vacation, the weather can quickly change and leave you stranded for days or weeks. Pay attention to hurricane watches and warnings and plan accordingly.
If your vacation location is suddenly under a hurricane warning, the most important thing to do is to monitor the local news for updates so you can evacuate as soon as possible. In the rare case that you learn of the evacuation order too late for you to safely leave, find a room that does not have any windows on the lowest floor of your hotel or rental home and stay there until the hurricane passes.
Local news and radio stations are great places to look for hurricane information. You can also find hurricane information on the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center's website. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration runs this website and offers analyses, forecasts and other data and tools.
