Annual Marathons, Triathlons and Races in the Florida Keys

Lounging on the beach and soaking in the turquoise blue water undoubtedly comes to mind when most visitors picture the stunning beauty of the Florida Keys. For runners and marathoners, though, this slice of paradise is the perfect place to push their endurance to new limits. Every year, the Keys hosts some of the most epic and scenic running events in Florida.

Whether you are searching for a Florida half marathon or wish to run among sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and panoramic views, here are some yearly races, marathons and triathlons found among this gorgeous island chain.

Key West Half Marathon and Runfest

The Key West Half Marathon is considered one of the greatest running events of the winter season. The picturesque 13.1-mile course runs along the island's waterfront, passing historic landmarks and taking runners across the Cow Key Channel Bridge and near the White Pier for stunning sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean.

After the marathon, head to the Key West Runfest which includes a 5K and 10K. Ultimate bragging rights go to runners who complete all three races — locally called the “Big Pecker Challenge."

The 7 Mile Bridge Run

At just under 7 miles, the Annual 7 Mile Bridge Run is a springtime staple for the Florida running community and one of the most memorable runs in the country. The course takes you along the famous Florida Keys Seven Mile Bridge, which ribbons across sparkling waters and breathtaking views from Knights Key to the bridge's end in Pigeon Key. This one-of-a-kind running event is completely surrounded by water from start to finish.

The Keys100 Ultramarathon

Are you ready to take your running to the next level? The Keys100 Ultramarathon is an extreme long-distance event that runs nearly the entire length of the Florida Keys, crossing 42 islands from Key Largo to Key West. While some ultramarathoners run course as a whole, you can participate in point-to-point races individually or as a six-runner relay team. There is also a 50-mile and 50-kilometer course.

Hemingway 5K Sunset Run

Named after the Keys' most famous resident, Ernest Hemingway, the Hemingway 5K Sunset Run celebrates the famed writer's sporting interests. Held during the Hemingway Days festival every July, this annual race is a fantastic family-friendly run.

Enjoy a sunset run through Key West's picturesque waterfront areas, including the historic Old Town and Ernest Hemingway House. Many participants double the fun by participating in the 5K and a three-mile paddleboard race around the island.

Southernmost Half Marathon and 10k

Marathoners and running enthusiasts converge every fall for the southernmost marathon in the mainland United States. The Southernmost Half Marathon and 10K is an unforgettable experience, taking racers past the Conch Republic's most iconic landmarks. The flat course is an excellent introduction to marathoning.

While the 10K course runs primarily along the oceanfront, the half marathon starts and finishes at Higgs Beach, Key West. It takes you through Old Town and to the Southernmost Point Buoy, which marks the southmost point in the U.S.

The Key West Triathlon

Test your athletic performance and mental endurance in three events — swimming, biking and running. Located on the southernmost island, the Key West Triathlon takes racers through an epic experience every December. Plunge through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Cycle along U.S. Route 1 by Smather's Beach. Finally, race down the scenic boardwalk and cross the finish line. If you prefer a team experience, the triathlon allows for two or three-person relay teams.

Islamorada Half Marathon, 10K, Rumrunner Run and Beach N' Beer Mile

Experience some of the most diverse races in Florida. Islamorada Running Co. brings four running events to the Keys every December. Test your skills at the crack of dawn with the Islamorada Half Marathon or 10K, which starts with a beautiful sunrise and runs down the old highway through lovely Islamorada Village and across Whale Harbor Bridge.

The weekend of road races continues with the Rumrunner Run 5K race and the casual Beach N' Beer Mile, where you can soak in the views and drink up some brews.
