5 Must-See Museums, Memorials and Monuments in San Diego

San Diego's rich military history makes it an exceptional place to explore. A prominent part of the area's history is its connection to the U.S. Navy, which dates back to its inception in the 1700s. Here are five must-see military museums, memorials and monuments in San Diego to make your next trip memorable.

1. USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum

As far as San Diego military museums go, the USS Midway is one of the finest. The museum is housed in a decommissioned aircraft carrier and is one of the U.S.'s most popular 100-plus historic naval ships. Berthed along San Diego Bay, the museum is a tribute to hundreds of thousands of personnel who served aboard it.

The museum has simulators, interactive storytelling and unique exhibits, and it is 9 miles from San Diego Metro KOA Resort.

2. San Diego Air and Space Museum

The San Diego Air and Space Museum is another favorite. Situated in Balboa Park, the museum has a colossal collection of traditional military aircraft from WWI to the modern jet age. There is a hall of fame honoring all who created and built airplanes.

The museum is about 9 miles from our KOA Resort.

3. Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial

One of the most famous San Diego military memorials is the National Veterans Memorial. The tribute is the only memorial in the U.S. that honors living and deceased veterans. The massive cross rests on the 824-foot Mt. Soledad, making it visible from miles.

The memorial is within about 20 miles of our KOA Resort.

4. The Greatest Generation Collection

Another of the military sites to see in San Diego is The Greatest Generation Collection. The site includes photos, artwork and memorial statues that line the Embarcadero in Tuna Harbor Park. A renowned piece consists of the 30-foot tall monument — Unconditional Surrender. The memorial is based on the world-famous photograph of the sailor kissing the nurse after WWII ended.

The collection is within 10 miles of KOA Resort.

5. Cabrillo National Monument

Visit the Cabrillo National Monument and be taken back to the 16th century and the first European expedition to the United States' West Coast. Learn about the park's military history, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and other significant exhibits.

The monument is within 20 miles of the campground.
