Hike to the top of ancient-lava Picacho Peak; see Casa Grande ruins Natl. Monument built a thousand years ago by desert people; seek out Ironwood Natl. Monument, Pima Air & Space, Pinal Air Park airplane boneyard, Biosphere, Boyce Thompson arbrtm.
Picacho Peak is an ancient volcano - and you can hike to the top of it! Bring water and food. Hunter Trail goes straight up. At summit the stark surrounding desert makes a great panorama. Sunset Trail starts around back and follows the ridge line to the saddle. Take Peak Lane (I10 frontage) east from here for 7 miles and turn right - signs to Picacho Peak State Park. $7 flat per vehicle at ranger station.

The amazing 4-story "Great House" (Casa Grande) was built by the ancient Sonoran Desert People using 3,000 tons of caliche (mud). One of the largest prehistoric structures ever built in North America, its purpose remains a mystery! Just 18 miles due north on AZ-87 to Coolidge.

Open since 1999 when it was just the ostrich to feed. Nowadays, however, there are lots of critters to feed! Joining the ostrich are Miniature Sicilian Donkeys, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Fallow Deer, Peking Ducks, “The Goat Penthouse” and the “Hole in the Wall Gang” featuring Boer Goats, and the all-time favorite Rainbow Lorikeets. Turn left out of campground then right at the stop sign - go 8 miles (until road dead-ends) at Ostrich Ranch.
