Three Generations in the Making: The History of our KOA

Some places are more than just a place to stay. They're woven into family stories, childhood memories, summer traditions, and the lives of the people who call them home. For our family, Parry Sound KOA is exactly that.

What began as a family-owned campground has become a three-generation story — one filled with hard work, familiar faces, lifelong memories, and a love for the camping lifestyle. Today, we're proud to continue that story.

Where Our Story Began

Our family's connection to Parry Sound KOA began in 1989, when Tristan's grandparents, Lois and Keith Livingston purchased the property from a local couple. The campground was already established, but a new chapter was about to begin.

Lois and Keith took on the responsibility of running the park, welcoming campers and building the foundation of what would become a lasting family legacy.

The Next Generation: Don & Michelle

In the late 1990s, the campground passed into the next generation when Lois and Keith's daughter, Michelle, and her husband, Don, took over.

At the time, they were living in Caledonia, Ontario, with their two young sons and running a farm. After spending summers driving north to help Michelle's parents at the campground, they began to see the potential for something more. They eventually sold the farm, packed up their lives, and made the move north to call the campground home.

Under their ownership, the campground grew beyond what they could have imagined. Through hard work and dedication, they built a thriving destination, welcomed countless families, and developed a loyal community of returning campers.

One of Michelle's biggest contributions was introducing themed event weekends. What started as an idea quickly became a defining part of the Parry Sound KOA experience. Her vision of creating memorable experiences for families became one of the things the campground is best known for today.

Their commitment to guest experience was recognized through several industry honours, including customer service awards, a Brand Excellence Award, and Guest Experience Awards.

Don and Michelle shaped Parry Sound KOA into what it is today, building a strong foundation for the next generation.

Growing Up at the Campground

For Tristan, the campground was never just a place to visit during the summer. It was home.

He started working in the park at just 10 years old, escorting guests to their sites, delivering firewood, and getting to know the families who returned year after year. He grew up immersed in every part of campground life, taking pride in being part of the family legacy. What started as a childhood job quickly grew into a lifelong passion.

After graduating from Georgian College and spending some time travelling, Tristan returned at 21, ready to build his future at the campground. He started with smaller updates, modernizing the store and amenities, before teaching himself everything from landscaping and stonework to building patios and transforming the property. Having learned from both his parents, he became involved in every aspect of the business, from the office to the grounds, taking a hands-on approach to continually improving the guest experience.

As his vision for the campground grew, so did his understanding that building its future would take the right teammate by his side.

A New Chapter, A Familiar Place

Tristan's story with the campground was always closely tied to his story with Taylor.

The two were high school sweethearts, but life eventually took them in different directions for nearly a decade. When they found their way back to each other, it didn't take long to realize that some things were always meant to come full circle.

Taylor had always loved the campground, and stepping back into that world felt natural. What once meant summer visits and family memories would soon become something they would build together.

In 2026, Tristan and Taylor officially stepped into their role as the third generation of the family to run the Parry Sound KOA.

Honouring the Past, Building the Future

Taking on a family business comes with a special kind of responsibility. There is so much history, hard work, and love behind what has been built, and we don't take that lightly.

Our goal is to honour everything that makes Parry Sound KOA special while continuing to bring fresh ideas, new experiences, and a little bit of our own personality to the park.

  • From familiar family traditions to new themed weekends, campground activities, property improvements, and the little details that make a stay memorable, we're excited to keep creating a place where people can return year after year.

Your Story Becomes Part of Ours

Three generations later, one thing remains the same: we love what this campground represents.

Whether you've been visiting Parry Sound KOA for decades, remember the park from its earlier days, or are planning your very first visit, we're so happy you're here.

We're proud of where we've come from, excited about where we're going, and grateful to be part of the memories you make along the way.

Here's to old traditions, new beginnings, and many more seasons together.

With love,
Tristan & Taylor
Your hosts at Parry Sound KOA
