Fat Tuesday Uptown Mardi Gras Parades

Mar 4, 2025, 8am - 5pm
Uptown
New Orleans,

There are four parades that roll today in Uptown (near the WWII museum, down St. Charles Ave.). The first parade, the Krewe of Zulu, runs at 8 AM. The next three parades, run immediately after the first one, one after the other. The second parade, is the Krewe of Rex, followed by the Krewe of Elks Orleans, followed by the Krewe of Crescent City.

"The Zulu Mardi Gras parade originated in New Orleans around 1909, founded by African American men who wanted to create their own Mardi Gras celebration separate from the predominantly white krewes, and used the Zulu theme as a way to satirize the power structures of the time by dressing in stereotypical African attire, including grass skirts and blackface, while mocking the pompousness of the white Carnival royalty with a "King Zulu" wearing a lard can crown and banana stalk scepter; this was essentially a form of protest against the segregated nature of Mardi Gras at the time." ~per google

"The most famous Krewe of Zulu king was Louis Armstrong who reigned in 1949.

Rex is the King of Carnival. Rex has held more parades than any other organization. They are the origin of many Mardi Gras traditions, including the official Carnival colors of purple, green and gold, as well as the collectible doubloon coins.

Founded in 1872, the Krewe of Rex is one of the oldest participating groups in Mardi Gras. They formed in a New Orleans still recovering from the Civil War as a way to entice tourists to visit the city and businesses to put down roots in the community.

Every year, one member of the Rex organization is selected to be Rex, the monarch of the krewe for the year. Rex is always an influential resident involved in a multiple civic causes and philanthropic pursuits. Rex's identity is kept secret until Lundi Gras, the day before Mardi Gras. Traditionally, the mayor hands Rex a symbolic key to the city.

The Krewe of Elks Orleans follows Rex with 50 individually designed truck floats. Founded in 1935, the Krewe of Elks Orleans is the oldest and largest of all the truck float krewes.

The Krewe of Crescent City is the city's second-oldest truck parade & the last parade in Orleans Parish. The krewe signals the official "beginning of the end" of Carnival.
