Nestled at the foot of the majestic Superstition Mountains, the Mesa / Apache Junction KOA offers more than just a comfortable stay – it provides a front-row seat to one of nature's most captivating phenomena: “The Cougar's Shadow”.
Imagine the sun slowly dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with fiery hues. Then, for a precious few minutes during the spring and fall equinoxes (March and September), the rugged slopes of the Superstition Mountains transform before your eyes. The setting sun casts a dramatic silhouette, revealing the majestic form of a crouching cougar, poised and watchful. This awe-inspiring natural display, also referred to as "The Cougar Chasing Prey" shadow, is a truly unique experience.
This rare event occurs only twice a year, around the third week of March and September. Guests at the Mesa / Apache Junction KOA have the perfect vantage point to observe this fleeting spectacle. While the exact timing can vary slightly depending on weather and other factors, it typically appears in the last 30 minutes before sunset.
