Discover Some of the Best Hiking in Vogel Canyon

With all of the trails surrounding Vogel Canyon, hiking is one of the most popular activities to do while visiting. There are four main trails in the area that you will want to be sure you add to your itinerary. Each trail will give you the opportunity to meander through the mesa and shortgrass prairie and then reach the bottom of the canyon.

Overlook Trail

The Overlook Trail is about 1 mile long and is considered an easy route. The trail is also handicap accessible, making it possible for travelers of all abilities to get to the canyon. This out-and-back trail features a gravel walkway. While walking along this popular Vogel Canyon hiking trail, you'll be able to take in the views of the river and gaze out over a small cliff.

Canyon Trail

The Canyon Trail gives hikers the unique chance to view the ruins of the 1930s Westbrook settlement and Native American rock art. This easy to moderately challenging 1 ¾-mile hike takes you on a journey down into the canyon, and you will be able to travel through pinion pines and sandstone formations. Also, while on this out-and-back trail, you can either go back to the trailhead the same way you traveled or switch it up and trek back on the Overlook, Mesa or Prairie trails.

Mesa Trail

Spurring off the Overlook Trail, you will find the Mesa Trail. While it is a little longer, with a 2 ¼-mile round trip, the Mesa Trail is considered to be an overall easy to moderate trail. It is a fairly quiet trail, so you most likely will not see a lot of people out during your hike. Along with letting you make your way through the pinion pines, you will also get to view some rock art along the way.

This out-and-back trail connects to the Prairie Trail, giving hikers the opportunity to continue traversing through the shortgrass prairie before heading back.

Prairie Trail

For a bit more of a challenge, you will want to check out the Prairie Trail. This 3-mile round-trip trail is situated off the stage road. You will start before the parking lot and picnic area. While on your hike, you will see everything from natural springs to the shortgrass prairie to old settlement ruins. The trail goes into the canyon, offering a stunning view of the area and an up close and personal glimpse at some of the history surrounding the canyon.

Delve Into History With Vogel Canyon's Petroglyphs

Vogel Canyon has a rich history dating back to when the Native Americans used to live there, about 300-800 years ago. They likely found the canyon to be an ideal living area with the natural landscape, rivers and springs. While this canyon was their home, the Native Americans created all kinds of rock art. Even hundreds of years later, this art, which can be found surrounding the canyon, is still visible and gives hikers a glimpse into the past.
