The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is the most popular organized hike in the United States (15,000 walkers in a record year). This family event is sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the American Volkssport Association (AVA) and hosted by Crazy Horse Memorial®Hikers follow dirt trails and gravel work roads up to the Crazy Horse Mountain Carving. The turn-around point is on the Arm of Crazy Horse directly in front of the nine-story-high face, which was completed June 3, 1998. Hikers get an up-close view of the mountain. Work continues on the rest of what will be the largest sculpture in the world.The Laughing Water Restaurant at Crazy Horse opens for breakfast at 6 a.m. during the Volksmarch, and serves lunch and dinner. The snack shop also is open. The Spring Volksmarch in 2025 will only be the first Saturday of June.

For the annual Main Street Arts & Crafts Festival in Hot Springs, vendors are instructed to provide hand-crafted items as opposed to commercial or machine made crafts. There are local artisans as well as ones from several states. The festival includes food vendors and entertainment. A children's stage is also part of the event. The event takes place three days over the last full weekend of June. 2027 will mark the 50th year of the festival.

In 1874, Lieutenant Colonel George Custer led the troops of the 7th Cavalry into the Black Hills and discovered gold near present day Custer. To celebrate this event, Custer holds the annual Gold Discovery Days celebration. Activities include an Arts and Crafts Fair on Washington Street, the Gold Panners' Race, a carnival, a volleyball tournament, a 5K fun run, balloon rally, car show, corn hole tournament and one of the largest parades in the Black Hills.  The Story of the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally...When Clarence "Pappy" Hoel purchased an Indian Motorcycle franchise in the depths of the Great Depression, he had no idea that he was about to begin the most famous motorcycle gathering in the world. It all began in 1938, when Pappy, his wife, Pearl, and his newly founded Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club decided to host a race in Sturgis. Nine participants and a mere 200 spectators attended. Today the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is one of, if not 'the' largest gatherings of motorcycle enthusiasts in the world.The Rally occurs every August in the Black Hills of South Dakota, home to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse National Memorial and Devil's Tower Monument to name a few of the area's most recognized 'icons'.

The 2025 City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, August 1st-10th, celebrates the 85th Anniversary of the event that has become known to motorcycle enthusiasts throughout the world as the "Granddaddy of 'em all". Attendance for the 75th Anniverary in  2015 the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was estimated at 739,000 with participants from all 50 states as well as Canada and dozens of other international communities including Japan, Australia, Germany, England, etc. From South Dakota's Governor, to entertainment and sports superstars, to motorcycle industry legends, you're likely to find them all strolling Main Street and enjoying the sights and sounds that are "Sturgis"!

Feel the thunder at the 60th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup on Friday, September 26, 2025. Watch cowboys, cowgirls and park rangers as they round up and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo. Be sure to plan for plenty of time at the three-day Arts Festival, September 25-27, where more than 100 vendors will offer fine arts and crafts and South Dakota made products. (On Friday, parking lots open at 6:15 a.m. Early arrival is recommended.) There is no admission to the Roundup or the Arts Festival, but a park entrance license is required September 25 and 27 (it is not required September 26).
