Star Gazing: Buffalo River Named International Dark Sky Park

The Buffalo National River Dark Sky Park, nestled in the picturesque Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas, offers an enchanting experience for stargazing enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. As one of the few designated International Dark Sky Parks in the United States, it provides an exceptional opportunity to witness the celestial wonders in a setting free from urban light pollution. Visitors can marvel at the Milky Way stretching across the night sky, observe constellations with striking clarity, and perhaps catch a glimpse of a shooting star. The park's commitment to preserving its natural nighttime environment not only enhances the stargazing experience but also supports local wildlife and ecosystems. Whether you're an avid astronomer or simply seeking a peaceful night under the stars, the Buffalo River Dark Sky Park promises a memorable and awe-inspiring escape into the wonders of the universe.

The Buffalo National River has three designated wilderness areas within its boundaries. Headquarters for the Buffalo National River are located in Harrison, Arkansas, providing administrative services to the national river. The Tyler Bend Visitor Center, the main visitor center for the park, is located 18 miles south of Harrison, Arkansas. The park has two other visitor contact stations; the Pruitt Ranger Station, located ten miles south of Harrison, Arkansas on Highway 7, and Buffalo Point Ranger Station, located 17 miles south of Yellville, Arkansas, on Highway 14. Most areas are Pet Friendly with Restrictions.
