Arctic Circle

Arctic Circle

At latitude 66° 33' north, the sun does not rise for one day during winter solstice, December 21, nor does it set for one day during summer solstice, June 21. This place that many dream about visiting is 196 driving miles (or 140 air miles) north of Fairbanks. Tour via van, motorcoach or plane up the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, and cross over that invisible line that puts you in the company of ice road truckers, Alaska pipeline workers and intrepid travelers. The 415-mile long road is 75% gravel and 25% paved and has limited or no cell reception. Fairbanks is the perfect jumping off point to begin trips into the Arctic. As a basecamp, you can experience the vast wilderness panoramas, tundra-laden landscape, and the indigenous cultures that define Alaska's Arctic. See the mighty Yukon River and spot a muskox or an Arctic fox. Cross the Arctic Circle and explore regions farther north like the Brooks Range, the Gates of the Arctic National Park, Coldfoot, Wiseman, Fort Yukon, Bettles, Anaktuvuk Pass, Prudhoe Bay and Kaktovik. Fly bush mail routes into rural communities accessible only by air. Discover the enchanted treeless Arctic plain or walk the frozen shores of the Arctic Ocean at the northernmost point in North America. Many locations offer village tours, visitor centers and historic sites, the aurora borealis, wildlife viewing and more.

Santa Claus House

Santa Claus House

It's Christmas year-round in North Pole, Alaska—just a little over 10 minutes away from our campground. You'll find candy canes painted on city streets and holiday parades in July. And at the hub of the festivities is Santa Claus House, a frontier general store and post office turned holiday shop. The postal tradition lives on—official Letters from Santa are postmarked from the North Pole and stamped with an official Santa seal. And today, the store includes live reindeer, a coffee shop, holiday gift items, the world's largest Santa statue and, in summer months and over holidays, Santa himself.

Chena Hot Springs

Chena Hot Springs

Chena Hot Springs Resort operates a big indoor pool and handsome outdoor wading lake, all of it constantly replenished by pungent mineral spring water that rises from the earth at about 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The facility has authentic Gold Rush roots and was already a premier destination for Alaska's Interior by 1912, with people traveling by stage from Fairbanks. It remains a remarkable place to visit—probably the most accessible and popular hot springs in the state—with a reputation for open-air aurora viewing during winter. The resort includes a campground, cabins and rooms to rent, a popular restaurant, tours of all kinds and an indoor museum fashioned from 1,000 tons of ice. It's also a snap to visit as a day trip from Fairbanks.Indoors you'll find a hot tub and a heated pool. The boulder-lined outdoor lake is handicapped accessible and restricted to adults. Its sandy bottom makes for comfortable walking, and patrons often stroll around until they find the Goldilocks sweet spot (not too hot, not too cold) for their soak.

Alyeska Pipeline / Viewing Point

Alyeska Pipeline / Viewing Point

Get a close-up look at one of the world's engineering marvels. Here you will find informational displays about the pipeline and an example of a pig, the device used to clean and inspect the inside of the pipeline. It took 70,000 construction workers and $8 billion of investment capital to build the famous 4-foot silver thread that snakes its way through 800 miles of Alaskan wilderness to reach the nation's thirsty refineries, crossing mountain ranges, earthquake zones, permafrost, and rivers. Some 420 miles of the pipeline are elevated (with 554 animal crossings), and outside Fairbanks is the place to see it.
