Family Camping Trip Is Closer Than You Think

Family Camping Trip Is Closer Than You Think

The Ontario Family Camping Trip You’ve Been Putting Off Is Closer Than You Think

You know the feeling. Summer arrives, the kids are out of school, and everyone has been talking about “doing something this year.” But between gas prices, packed airports, and the sheer logistics of going far, the big trip keeps getting pushed to next weekend. Then the one after that.

Here’s the thing: the trip you’ve been putting off might only be a few hours away.

Brighton / 401 KOA Holiday sits right off Highway 401 at Exit 509, just over 2 hours from Toronto, 1.5 hours from Kingston, and under 3 hours from Ottawa. It’s a campground that feels like a full vacation destination for the whole family: a heated outdoor pool, two playgrounds with zip lines and jumping pillows, Deluxe Cabins with full baths, gorgeous KOA Patio® RV Sites with views toward Lake Ontario, and enough on-site activities to fill a week. And right outside the gates, some of Ontario’s best nature, history, and local flavour is waiting to be explored.

We’ve built two itineraries: a 4-night and a 5-night stay, so you can choose the one that fits your family’s schedule. Both are designed to feel like a real vacation. Less driving. More living.

Itinerary 1: The 4-Night Family Staycation

Four nights is the sweet spot. Long enough to truly unwind and see the area, short enough to not require a week of prep. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Day 1: Arrive & Settle In

Get here, get comfortable, and let the vacation begin. Whether you’ve chosen a spacious RV site with full hook-ups or a Deluxe Cabin complete with a queen bed, bunk beds, fridge, microwave, and BBQ, you’ll feel at home quickly. Some sites offer a stunning view of rolling hills with Lake Ontario visible on a clear day, which is worth pausing to take in. Let the pace of camp life take over!

Spend the rest of Day 1 exploring camp. Hit the heated outdoor pool and hot tub, check out the two playgrounds (zip lines and jumping pillows, the kids will be done asking “what is there to do” within five minutes), browse the fully stocked camp store, and get your bearings. Check the events calendar to see what’s happening at camp during your stay.

Day 2: Beach Day at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Pack the sunscreen, the towels, and the snacks; today is a beach day. Presqu’ile Provincial Park is just 15 minutes from camp and is one of Ontario’s most treasured provincial parks. The name comes from the French for “almost an island,” and the park sits on a beautiful peninsula jutting into Lake Ontario.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:

  • A gorgeous 2.5 km sandy beach on Popham Bay, perfect for swimming, sandcastles, and long, lazy afternoons in the sun
  • 16 km of trails and paths through forest, shoreline, and meadow
  • A 1 km marsh boardwalk over the largest protected marsh on the north shore of Lake Ontario, keep your eyes open for herons, turtles, and migrating birds
  • Ontario’s second-oldest operating lighthouse, built in 1840 and open daily in summer
  • Daily interpretive programs at the Nature Centre for kids in July and August

A daily vehicle permit is required to enter, plan to spend the full day here. On your way back, swing into Brighton for dinner.

The Whistling Duck Pub & Restaurant on Brighton Harbour is a local favourite, known for its waterfront patio, fresh food, and relaxed atmosphere. Their chicken wings and seafood chowder are the stuff of local legend. A perfect end to a beach day.

Day 3: Hike, History & Heritage Downtown

Start the morning with a proper hike at H.R. Frink Conservation Area, about 25 minutes from camp near Belleville. This 341-acre conservation area has 13 km of trails through mature hardwood forest, along the Moira River and a silver maple swamp, and across the beautiful Wetland Ecology Boardwalk, a wooden walkway over a Provincially Significant Wetland that’s home to snapping turtles, blue and green herons, three species of frog, and more. Easy, flat trails, great for all ages. Dogs welcome on leash.

In the afternoon, explore Brighton’s heritage downtown, just minutes from camp:

  • The Proctor House Museum is a beautifully preserved 19th-century Colonial mansion offering guided tours through period-furnished rooms and fascinating local history. A quiet, worthwhile stop.
  • Stroll the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail along Brighton’s harbour, a scenic, easy walk connecting the waterfront, downtown shops, and the lake. Great for an after-dinner evening stroll.

Back at camp, fire up the BBQ and enjoy a proper camp dinner. You’ve earned it.

Day 4: Apple Country Road Trip & Local Flavour

Your final full day is for exploring one of Ontario’s most scenic and delicious drives, apple country along Lake Ontario’s north shore. Start at The Big Apple in Colborne, just 20 minutes west on the 401. This family institution has been a Highway 401 landmark since 1987: a genuine 40-foot apple-shaped structure with a bakery that makes fresh pies daily, a petting zoo, mini-golf, a Treat Shoppe, the 401 Cider Brewery, and the Smokehouse for ribs and brisket. Budget a couple of hours; it’s more than a roadside stop.

Continue along Highway 2 and the county roads east toward Brighton, stopping at farm stands and markets along the way. Pick up local honey, fresh produce, and anything that catches your eye for a proper “farm-to-fire” last night at camp.

Tonight: campfire, local food, and a sky full of stars. A perfect final evening.

Day 5: Final Morning & Head Home

Sleep in. Have a slow camp breakfast. Let the kids do one last run on the zip line and one final cannonball into the pool. Take a photo at the campground sign. Then pack up and head home, rested, restored, and already planning the next trip.

If Five Nights Sounds Better

If four nights sound good, and five nights sound better. This itinerary adds one more day of adventure and gives the whole family proper time to breathe, explore, and make the kind of memories that last. This is the trip they’ll still be talking about all year!

Day 5: Dinos, Reptiles & Adventure

Today, the kids’ jaws are going to drop. Head about an hour west to Canada’s Dinosaur Park (Indian River Reptile & Dinosaur Park) near Peterborough, Canada’s ONLY dinosaur park and reptile sanctuary. Over 100 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Hundreds of live reptiles, including alligators, crocodiles, caimans, snakes, turtles, and lizards. The Famous Croc-Walk, a Bone Dig, Feathers & Fossils Museum, mini-golf, and a food truck. Walk-in tickets are available at the gate. An educational, action-packed day that the kids will genuinely not stop talking about.

Back at camp in the evening for optional events or relaxation.

Day 6: Final Morning & Head Home

The last morning always feels a little bittersweet; that’s how you know it was a good trip. Slow breakfast, one last swim, a final lap around the campground. Let the dogs run around and stretch their legs at KampK9 before the ride back home. Pack up at your own pace, wave goodbye to the staff who know you by name, and head home. You came for a getaway. You’re leaving with a tradition and fun memories.
