Women's Rights National Historical Park tells the story of the first Women's Rights Convention, held in Seneca Falls, New York on July 19-20, 1848. It is a story of struggles for civil rights, human rights, and equality, global struggles that continue today. The efforts of women's rights leaders, abolitionists, and other 19th century reformers remind us that all people must be accepted as equals. The park consists of several historic buildings in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York, as well as a visitor center and museum space in downtown Seneca Falls.

We like to think the happiest cows around are right here in the Finger Lakes. Created to provide dairy products directly to their customers, the Murray family started the Muranda Cheese Company in 2007. Today they produce over 17 types of cheeses praised by the culinary world for their excellence in taste and quality. Visit their tasting room daily between 10am and 5pm. The beautifully restored barn is worth the trip alone!

The idea of Memorial Day started right here in Waterloo when, during the 1860s, local business leader Henery Welles argued that remembering those who died fighting America's wars should be honored and remembered. Initial groundwork proved fruitless; however, Welles persisted, and with the help of Civil War General John Murray, a Memorial Day ceremony took place on May 5, 1866, marking the beginning of a tradition and the holiday that is still so important today.

A favorite spot of ours for a cheeseburger and root beer served in a frosty mug, Mac's is legendary among Finger Lakes places to eat. The vibe is straight out of the 1950's, think milkshakes and hot rods. We're not sure their hard to beat prices have changed since then either. Open daily during the summer and weekends during the shoulder seasons, Mac's is just moments by car from the campground as you head toward Geneva.

In 1818, the Seneca Canal was built to connect Seneca Lake with Cayuga Lake. A few years later, the Erie Canal opened in 1825. When these two canals were connected just two years later, Seneca Falls became a major player in the trade and industry that flourished as a result of the new east/west corridor. The Seneca Museum offers historical context, unique insight, and visual representation during this time frame. Located downtown at the Seneca Falls Tourism Center, the museum is an excellent choice for an action-packed day in the historic town of Seneca Falls.

The Cayuga-Seneca Canalway Trail is a 6.7-mile pathway beginning in Waterloo, New York and terminating at Seneca Lake State Park. The roadbed it uses was constructed by the Seneca County Railway from 1896 to 1897. The railroad opened to Waterloo on October 24, 1897 and in 1898 all the way along the canal into Seneca Falls, ending near where the Ovid Street Bridge is today. In 1903 the railway was merged into the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Passenger trains served the line until September of 1914. Freight train service continued on this roadbed into the early 1970's (some reports say 1969, but sporadic service remained past then). By 1975 the tracks were removed, awaiting this new era for the old roadbed, which witnessed the passing of the lives of many fine people of Seneca County & beyond. The current stretch of trail kicks off near Lock 4 in Waterloo and heads southwest towards Lake Seneca. The heavily wooded corridor follows the canal through the picturesque pastoral landscape and tranquil wetlands, allowing users to experience the natural beauty of the area at a leisurely pace. The trail surface is flat, smooth limestone dust, making it ideal for a variety of uses, including walking, jogging, biking and wheelchair use. After passing through the Bishop Preserve, a tunnel under 96A provides a direct connection to Seneca Lake State Park. Follow the trail along the lakefront and access the park's numerous amenities.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
