When two monks came from Pennsylvania to Colorado in 1886, their goal was to fulfill the Benedictine motto — ora et labora. Pray and work. Like many of their order, they pursued winemaking as a source of income while also opening a boarding school. The school operated until 1985, and upon its closing, the remaining monks returned to the idea of establishing a vineyard on the pastoral grounds.
The Benedictine monks have since moved on. However, they have entrusted their 200 acres to a professional viticulturist who has transformed the Abbey Winery into one of the Rocky Mountains' top wine production and culture destinations.
