Things to Do in Huron-Manistee National Forest

If you are planning a vacation to Michigan, the Huron-Manistee National Forest must be at the top of your list for things to do. Located between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, the almost one million-acre area is home to hundreds of miles of trails, thousands of lakes and countless stunning scenic views. The Huron-Manistee National Forest offers plenty of thrilling outdoor activities that the whole family will love.

Hit the Water

When the weather gets hot, there is no better way to cool off than by spending time on the water. There are several rivers, streams, lakes and ponds near our campground that offer exciting outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.

Bowman Lake and Whelan Lake are excellent spots for a refreshing swim. You can also slip your waders on and cast your line, reeling in all sorts of exciting fish. A must-have experience is fishing in the Pere Marquette River, a famous river known for its blue-ribbon trout. Plus, when winter rolls around, these are excellent spots for some ice fishing, offering an exciting twist on a classic outdoor activity.

Explore Endless Trails

If you are looking to get outside and explore nature in our part of the country, the area is full of exciting adventures for hikers of all experience levels. The Manistee River Trail and the Bowman Lake route are perfect for early risers looking to stretch their legs before starting the day. The Bowman Lake trail doubles as an excellent spot for some snowshoeing in the winter as well.

You can also find off-trail hiking in the Huron-Manistee National Forest, perfect for longer, more intense backpacking excursions. The North Country Trail offers a 25-mile trek along various lakes within the wild Michigan country. If that is something you are interested in, talk to one of our campground staff members who can point you in the right direction.

Nature Viewing

Michigan is chock-full of forests overflowing with exciting new species of wildlife to discover. The state is home to more than 400 bird species and over 200 other species of wildlife, giving you an excellent chance to see something you have never seen before.

Go at it alone or connect with a guided tour, like the Kirtland's Warbler and Jack Pine Wildlife Tour. You and your family will traverse 58 miles in your car through jack pine ecosystems, which are home to a variety of wildlife — it is an activity that is educational and fun for everyone!

Biking and Skiing

Looking for things to do around Lake Michigan? You can always explore the area on two wheels thanks to the Big M trail network. This is the perfect area for all experience levels of mountain bikers, consisting of a 37.9-mile looped trail.

Since the parking lots to the Big M are cleared in the winter, the trail also proves to be a fantastic place for cross-country skiers. You will have several miles of pristine trail to get outside and explore the area in the snow.
