Most high alpine passes are typically open from late June through September, depending on snowfall. July brings wildflowers, while September offers incredible fall colors.

One of the most popular trails near Ouray, Yankee Boy Basin offers waterfalls, old mining views, and stunning mountain scenery. Lower sections are manageable for many SUVs, while upper sections become steeper and rockier.

Ophir Pass is a great introduction to alpine off-roading. Drivers can expect narrow shelf-road sections, loose rock, and incredible views, but it’s generally considered less intimidating than some of the area’s more advanced trails.

Connecting Ouray and Telluride, Imogene Pass climbs above 13,000 feet and features rocky climbs, shelf roads, and incredible alpine scenery. The Ouray side tends to be steeper and more technical.

Black Bear Pass is one of Colorado’s most famous — and most intimidating — trails. Known for steep switchbacks, narrow shelf roads, and dramatic drop-offs, this route should only be attempted by experienced drivers.
