From Montrose, turn right on County Road 23 (mile marker 98)
From Ouray, turn left on County Road 23.
Surrounded by the rugged San Juan Mountains, Ouray is one of the top off-roading destinations in Colorado. From scenic beginner-friendly drives to legendary expert trails, there’s something for every skill level near Ouray KOA Holiday.
Most high alpine passes are typically open from late June through September, depending on snowfall. July brings wildflowers, while September offers incredible fall colors.

One of the most popular trails near Ouray, Yankee Boy Basin offers waterfalls, old mining views, and stunning mountain scenery. Lower sections are manageable for many SUVs, while upper sections become steeper and rockier.

Ophir Pass is a great introduction to alpine off-roading. Drivers can expect narrow shelf-road sections, loose rock, and incredible views, but it’s generally considered less intimidating than some of the area’s more advanced trails.

Connecting Ouray and Telluride, Imogene Pass climbs above 13,000 feet and features rocky climbs, shelf roads, and incredible alpine scenery. The Ouray side tends to be steeper and more technical.

Part of Colorado’s famous Alpine Loop, this route combines mountain scenery, historic mining towns, and rugged terrain. Trail conditions can vary throughout the season depending on weather and erosion.

Black Bear Pass is one of Colorado’s most famous — and most intimidating — trails. Known for steep switchbacks, narrow shelf roads, and dramatic drop-offs, this route should only be attempted by experienced drivers.
