In 2024, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests expanded their protected lands by acquiring 27 acres in Ouray County, Colorado. This newly acquired land is home to an extraordinary paleontological treasure — the largest continuous stretch of dinosaur footprints in the region. The trackway, known as the West Gold Hill Dinosaur Track Site, features an impressive 134 distinct footprints spanning a remarkable 106 yards, providing a rare glimpse into prehistoric life.
Visitors are welcome to explore the site, but access is strictly limited to foot traffic to preserve the natural environment and protect the ancient tracks. It’s important to note that the trail leading to the site may present challenges, making it best suited for experienced hikers who are comfortable navigating rugged and uneven terrain. Those who make the journey are rewarded with a fascinating blend of natural beauty and a direct connection to the distant past.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
