About the Valley River

KOA Murphy/Peace Valley is nestled on the banks of the majestic Valley River, a tributary of the Hiawassee River. The Valley River, fed by natural springs, begins at the Nantahala Forest, and winds through the valley between Andrews, NC and Murphy, NC.

Wildlife of the Valley River

The Valley River, and its tributaries, is a diverse ecosystem with an immense variety of local fauna. You may expect to see deer, river otters, beavers, groundhogs, and muskrats. Local bird species such as mallards, hawks, kingfishers, bald eagles, wood ducks, herons, ospreys and Canada geese are also plentiful along the Valley River.

It is also important to note that copperhead snakes and timber rattlesnakes populate this area, so caution is advised. Additionally, while black bears are numerous in the local area, they generally avoid the river itself, however, it is best to be aware while enjoying river activities.

Fishing the Valley River

Fishing season in the North Carolina, hatchery-supported trout waters opens the first Monday in April, yearly. The season closes temporarily in the month of March for restocking. The North Carolina Department of Natural Resources stocks the river with rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Other native fish species in the Valley River include catfish, bream and smallmouth bass.

A fishing license is required for all adults fishing in the Valley River. Adult licenses can be purchased online, and at retailers within five minutes from the KOA Murphy/Peace Valley Campground. Children under 16 years old may fish for free, no license required.
