How Do I Know about Fire Restrictions at Lemolo Lake?

We get many phone calls each season about potential restrictions on campfires at Lemolo Lake KOA and the surrounding area.

Because we are located in the National Forest (The Umpqua National Forest to be exact), we are required to follow any restrictions the Forest Service puts in place as it relates to campfires, barbecue grills or other potential fire hazards.

Each year as the forest dries out in the summer months and the fire season begins, the Umpqua National Forest publishes on their website and distributes information relating to campfires and other uses through a process known as Public Use Restrictions (PUR).

The Public Use Restrictions or PUR have three (3) levels, PUR I, PUR II and PUR III.

So, what does that mean for campers at Lemolo Lake KOA?

While the restrictions have a lot of detail to them and differ in other areas, for the typical camper at our KOA the PUR I and PUR II restrictions are identical in how they impact our campers as detailed below:

PUR I & PUR II Restrictions for campers at Lemolo Lake KOA:

Alllowed:  Wood Campfires inside Forest Service approved fire rings (Lemolo Lake KOA's fire rings are FS approved).  Fire Pits, Stoves or Grills fueled by Liquid Fuel or Propane.

NOT Allowed:  All wood stoves, or any appliance that uses briquettes or charcoal (anything that produces ash).

ALL firewood must fit completely inside the fire ring (length and height) and MUST be put out COLD whenever you leave your site or turn in for the evening.

The final level of Public Use Restrictions - PUR III is the only level that does not allow for wood campfires at our KOA.  But you can still use propane and liquid fueled items as detailed below:

PUR III Restrictions:

Alllowed:    Fire Pits, Stoves or Grills fueled by Liquid Fuel or Propane ONLY.

NOT Allowed:  Wood Fires of ANY kind, or any appliance using briquettes or charcoal (anything that produces ash).

When PUR restrictions are put in place at any level, Lemolo Lake KOA is notified by the Forest Service and we post information relating to those restrictions at our campground in highly visible areas like the front of our store and at the entrance to the restroom building.  If you every have questions, feel free to ask any of our staff members for further information.
