Sabinoso Wilderness Area

Sabinoso Wilderness Area

The Sabinoso Wilderness is a remote area in the northeastern portion of New Mexico. The Wilderness includes a series of high, narrow mesas surrounded by cliff-lined canyons. The rugged country primarily supports piñon pine and juniper woodlands with occasional clusters of ponderosa pine. A perennial warm season grass savanna is found on the mesa tops. Streams periodically flow in the canyon bottoms supporting riparian vegetation including willow and cottonwood. The deep canyon area, surrounded by the wide-open New Mexico plains, is unique for this region. The deep incisions cut by Cañon Olguin, Cañon Largo, and Lagartija Creek create a striking topographical and geological contrast in this otherwise flat terrain.

Oldest House in the United States of America, Santa Fe

Oldest House in the United States of America, Santa Fe

For over a century, the house across the street from the San Miguel Chapel has been known as the oldest house in the city. While the structure is labeled the “oldest building” on the J. J. Stoner Bird's Eye View of the City of Santa Fe, N.M. 1882, its actual age is not known. While tree-ring specimens taken from wooden vigas date to about 1740–67, portions of the lower walls of one room in the house are made of puddled adobe, an indigenous building technique that predates the adobe mud bricks introduced by Spanish colonists. Even though its age remains debatable, it is a tourist destination that demonstrates how long tourism has been an important part of Santa Fe's economy. From Old Santa Fe Today, 5th edition by Audra Bellmore

Loma Parda - Ghost town inside the Mora National Wildlife Refuge

Loma Parda - Ghost town inside the Mora National Wildlife Refuge

Now essentially a ghost town, Loma Parda was forever changed when Fort Union moved into the neighborhood. Loma Parda became the town where soldiers could go for wild nights. Saloons, gambling, dance halls, and women of ill repute put Loma Parda on the map, especially if you were a soldier bored with your isolated existence at Fort Union. When a soldier went AWOL, it was half expected that he was still at Loma Parda, either passed out or just too drunk to know where he was. Not all drunken debauchery was on account of the soldiers, though; cowboys and teamsters from the Santa Fe Trail engaged in their share of the mayhem.

Thirty miles, give or take, north of Las Vegas. Getting There: Driving north from Las Vegas on NM Highway 518 to Mora at 26 miles, turn right onto New Mexico 161. Go approximately 14 miles, turn left, and cross the cattle guard - there will not be a sign. Loma Parda will be about 1.4 miles ahead. Check locally for road conditions. There are no services, so be sure to have a full tank of gas, and food and water.
