Camping with your Fur Babies

Happy Trails and Wagging Tails: Camping with Your Pets

For many of us, a family vacation wouldn’t feel complete without our pets. They’re our walking buddies, road-trip companions, and enthusiastic welcoming committee—even when we’ve only been gone five minutes!

A little planning can make camping with your pet more comfortable for everyone. Before heading to Hagerstown Antietam Battlefield KOA, here are a few ways to prepare for an enjoyable getaway with your furry travel companion.

Choose the Right Stay for Your Whole Family

Before booking, check the campground’s current pet policies, including which accommodations allow pets, any applicable fees, and leash requirements. If you’re reserving a cabin, lodge, or another rental, confirm that your specific accommodation welcomes your pet.

Tell the campground a little about your traveling companion, too. Asking questions ahead of time helps you choose a stay that works for your family.

Pack a Bag for Your Pet

Your pet deserves a camping bag of their own! A few familiar items can help an unfamiliar place feel more like home.

Bring:

  • Their usual food, treats, and food and water bowls.

  • A leash, a properly fitted collar or harness, and waste bags.

  • A favorite blanket, bed, or familiar toy.

  • Any regular medications and a copy of vaccination records.

  • A towel for muddy paws and unexpected messes.

  • Identification tags with your current phone number.

Keep the essentials within easy reach during the drive. A water bowl isn’t much help at a rest stop if it’s buried beneath all your camping gear!

Make the Journey Part of the Vacation

Plan time for water, bathroom breaks, and a little movement along the way. Keep your pet properly secured while traveling, and give yourself permission to take a slower pace.

Some pets settle into road trips easily, while others find travel stressful. If your pet has a history of motion sickness or travel anxiety, talk with your veterinarian before departure about a plan suited to them.

Help Your Pet Settle In

When you arrive, give your pet time to become familiar with the campsite. A relaxed walk and a chance to sniff their surroundings can be a pleasant first activity before the unpacking begins.

Set up a comfortable resting spot with their familiar bedding and access to fresh water. Try to keep meals and walks close to their usual schedule. Even on vacation, familiar routines can help the day feel predictable.

Be a Thoughtful Camping Neighbor

Campgrounds bring together people, pets, wildlife, and plenty of new distractions. Keep your pet leashed as required and close enough to supervise.

Ask before allowing your pet to approach another person or animal. Even a friendly dog needs an introduction, and some campers prefer a little space.

Clean up promptly, watch for excessive barking, and remember that unfamiliar noises or passing campers may unsettle a pet who is usually quiet at home. A little consideration helps everyone enjoy their stay.

Plan Outings with Your Pet in Mind

Before heading out to explore western Maryland, check the pet rules at each destination. Outdoor grounds, trails, historic buildings, restaurants, and visitor centers may have different policies.

Build your day around places and activities your pet can comfortably enjoy. Plan for someone to stay with them when an activity doesn’t allow pets, and avoid leaving them unattended at the campsite or in a parked vehicle.

A shorter outing with plenty of time to relax can be more enjoyable than trying to fit everything into one day.

Leave Room for the Simple Moments

Traveling with a pet is often about the little things: a morning walk, a new trail to sniff, or a peaceful evening beside your chair.

You don’t need a packed itinerary to make wonderful memories. Sometimes the best part of a camping trip is having time to slow down together.
