Extend Your Stay | 3 Days in Douglas, WY

Welcome to the Douglas KOA Holiday in Douglas, Wyoming! Known as the "Home of the Jackalope," Douglas is a hidden gem that blends frontier history with unique geological wonders.

This three-day itinerary is designed to help you balance relaxation at the campground with the best sights the Converse County area has to offer.

Day 1: Jackalopes and Campground Fun

Focus: Settling in, Downtown Douglas, and On-Site Amenities

  • Morning/Afternoon: Arrival and KOA Fun
    • Check into your site or cabin. Start your vacation by taking advantage of the Douglas KOA amenities. Let the kids burn off energy on the Jumping Pillow or challenge the family to a round of Mini-Golf.
    • If you brought your four-legged friend, head to the KampK9 dog park so they can stretch their legs after the drive.
  • Late Afternoon: Discover Downtown Douglas
    • Head five minutes south into downtown Douglas. Your first stop should be Jackalope Square to take a photo with the world-famous 8-foot-tall Jackalope statue.
    • Walk the historic downtown strip. Stop into local boutiques and the Douglas Hardware Hank for classic small-town vibes.
  • Evening: Dinner and Railroad History
    • Visit the Douglas Railroad Interpretive Center (located downtown). You can walk among a refurbished steam locomotive and several historic rail cars.
    • Dinner: Grab a craft beer and a burger at Headstrong Brewery or enjoy a meal at The Depot, a restaurant housed in a historic train station.
    • Nightcap: Return to the KOA for a sunset dip in the seasonal outdoor pool or light a fire at your site for s’mores.

Day 2: Natural Wonders and Frontier History

Focus: Ayres Natural Bridge and Wyoming Pioneer History

  • Morning: Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum
    • Located on the Wyoming State Fairgrounds, this is one of the best history museums in the state. It houses an extensive collection of Plains Indian artifacts and pioneer wagons. Best of all: admission is free!
  • Lunch: Picnic Prep
    • Stop by a local grocer to pack a picnic. You’re headed to one of Wyoming’s most beautiful hidden spots.
  • Afternoon: Ayres Natural Bridge Park
    • Drive about 15 miles west of the KOA to Ayres Natural Bridge. This is one of only three natural bridges in the United States with water (LaPrele Creek) flowing beneath it.
    • Recreation: Hike the short trails surrounding the red rock canyon, let the kids wade in the shallow creek, or simply enjoy your picnic under the shade of the cottonwood trees. It is a cool, lush oasis in the middle of the high plains.
  • Evening: KOA Relaxation
    • Head back to the KOA. If you’re staying in a Deluxe Cabin, enjoy a private BBQ on your patio. If you are RVing or tenting, use the well-maintained community kitchen/pavilion to whip up a feast.

Day 3: The Oregon Trail and River Life

Focus: Fort Fetterman and the North Platte River

  • Morning: Fort Fetterman State Historic Site
    • Drive 10 miles north of Douglas to visit this 1860s military outpost. Once a major hub for the military during the Plains Indian Wars and a key stop for Oregon Trail travelers, you can now tour the restored officers' quarters and an interpretive center. The views of the valley from the fort are spectacular.
  • Lunch: Downtown Deli
    • Head back to town for a quick sandwich or coffee at a local cafe like The Sidetrack.
  • Afternoon: Riverside Park & North Platte Recreation
    • Spend your final afternoon at Riverside Park. This beautiful park hugs the banks of the North Platte River.
    • Recreation: Walk or bike the paved Douglas River Trail, which offers several miles of scenic views. If you have a fishing license, this is a great spot to cast a line for trout.
  • Evening: Final KOA Send-off
    • Check the KOA schedule for any seasonal weekend activities (like ice cream socials or outdoor movies).
    • Finish your trip with a game of giant checkers or a final sunset walk around the campground before packing up.

Pro-Tips for your Stay:

  • Jackalope Hunting Licenses: Don't forget to stop by the Douglas Chamber of Commerce to get your "official" Jackalope Hunting License (only valid June 31st!).
  • Supplies: The KOA store is well-stocked with essentials, but for larger grocery hauls, there are full-service supermarkets in Douglas.
  • Weather: In the Wyoming summer, afternoons can get breezy and evenings cool down quickly. Always have a light jacket and plenty of sunblock ready!
