If you’re pulling your rig into the Douglas KOA Journey, you aren’t just stopping at a campground—you’re parking in the middle of a living history book.
Central Wyoming has always been a crossroads. Long before the asphalt of I-25 existed, this land was a bustling highway for pioneers, soldiers, and explorers. For the modern road tripper, Douglas serves as the perfect "base camp" to explore the sites where the American West was won, lost, and settled.
Ready to stretch your legs and travel back in time? Here are the must-visit historic landmarks just a short drive from your campsite.
Located just 15 minutes north of Douglas, Fort Fetterman was once the last outpost of civilization. Established in 1867, it sat at the dangerous intersection of several major trails. While many forts of that era have vanished, Fetterman still feels like a sentinel overlooking the North Platte River.
About 45 minutes southeast of the KOA, you’ll find arguably the most powerful evidence of the Great Migration: The Oregon Trail Ruts. This isn't just a plaque on a wall; these are actual trenches worn five feet deep into solid sandstone by the sheer volume of wagon wheels and livestock heading west.
Just down the road from the Ruts stands Register Cliff, a massive sandstone wall that served as a "19th-century guest book." Weary travelers would stop here to carve their names, dates, and hometowns into the rock, leaving a permanent record of their journey.
Douglas’s history isn't just about the 1800s. Right in town, you can visit the site of Camp Douglas, a prisoner-of-war camp that held thousands of Italian and German soldiers during World War II.
Located on the State Fairgrounds right in Douglas, this is one of the most comprehensive pioneer museums in the West. It’s the perfect "one-stop shop" to see Native American artifacts, pioneer clothing, and the tools used to build the very first ranches in the territory.
After a day of exploring dusty trails and historic forts, there’s nothing like coming "home" to modern comforts.
At the Douglas KOA, we love hearing our guests' stories about their day at the Natural Bridge or the Trail Ruts. You can spend your evening:
The road through Wyoming is long, but the stories it tells are even longer. We can’t wait to be a part of your journey!
