7 Southern California Adventures for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Southern California is an excellent place for a getaway if your health and wellness are essential to you. The outdoor fun offers the perfect opportunity to relax and be active. Strap in for these ultimate outdoor adventures when visiting the San Diego region.

1. Kayak at La Jolla Sea Caves

One of the top outdoor activities in Southern California is taking a kayak tour to the La Jolla Sea Caves. The guided tours are about two hours in and around the caves. While paddling, you may see dolphins, sea lions, leopard sharks and garibaldi. Your tour guide will tell you about the rich history of the caves, including smuggler tales and give you an overview of the area's marine ecosystem.

Find the sea caves at 2199 Avenida de la Playa La Jolla, CA, 92037.

2. Hike to Potato Chip Rock

Seeing Potato Chip Rock at Lake Poway Park requires a steep, 8-mile round-trip hike to the top of Mount Woodson. It is the perfect moderately strenuous walk to an iconic ledge that resembles a potato chip. Take the track in the early morning and bask in the magnificent views atop the 2,000 feet mountain summit. Be ready to use your full body strength — climbing to the iconic potato rock ledge works up a serious sweat.

Visit Potato Chip Rock in Lake Poway Park at 14644 Lake Poway Road, Poway, CA, 92064.

3. Play at Mission Beach

With nearly two miles of oceanfront boardwalk and warm sandy beaches, Mission Beach in San Diego offers endless opportunities for outdoor fun on land and in water. Enjoy activities such as:

  • Biking
  • Surfing
  • Beach volleyball
  • Sport fishing
  • Scuba diving
  • Swimming
  • Boogie boarding

  • Rollerblading
  • Jogging

Mission Beach is also home to Belmont Park with its exciting amusement rides and activities, such as a roller coaster, bumper cars and rock climbing. Whatever your interests are, you are sure to have a fun day at this beach.

Head to Mission Beach at Mission Beach, San Diego, CA 92109.

4. Go Climbing at Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is the home to many California outdoor activities and home to two distinct ecosystems that come together. The top activities on the active adventure list include climbing, bouldering and highlining. Joshua Tree offers 8,000 climbing routes, 2,000 bouldering obstacles and hundreds of natural gaps for trad climbers to explore. The park is open to visitors of all skill levels, and experienced guides can provide lessons if you are still learning.

Access the park at 6533 Freedom Way, Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277.

5. Explore the 1000 Steps Beach Saltwater Pools

If you are up for a drive to South Laguna Beach, you will find one of the most adventurous things to do in California. The 1000 Steps Beach is accessible by a steep stairway. The 223 steps down are fairly easy for travelers, but the steep climb up may elevate even an avid adventurer's heart rate.

On the sands, you can enjoy spectacular ocean views, swimming, bodysurfing and snorkeling. Just know that getting to the saltwater pools requires climbing through a sea cave tunnel during low tide.

Visit the beach at 31972 Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA, 92651.

6. Horseback Ride at Border Field State Park

Explore the beach during a 120-minute horseback ride. Surfside Ranch brings horses to Border Field State Park for you to enjoy the cool sea breeze, lapping ocean and silver sands. While walking at the water's edge, you may spy dolphins, seals and waterfowl.

Surfside Ranch also offers guided trail adventures, taking you through the San Diego County Trail System.

Go for a ride at 2225 Hollister Street, San Diego, CA, 92154.

7. Tour the Sand Dunes at Superstition Mountain

Depending on your skill level, take to the dunes on an all-terrain quad, vehicle or dirt bike. This four- to five-hour Sand Dunes Tour is the perfect way to explore the natural wonders of the desert. The 36-mile tour across colorful rugged-desert terrain gives you matchless views across dry bed lakes. The top of Superstition Mountain is the perfect spot for Instagram-worthy pictures.
