Giants of the Grove:
Step into the misty forests of Willapa Bay, and you might hear the distant bugle of a Roosevelt elk—a haunting, melodic call that echoes through the trees. These majestic creatures are the largest of the North American elk subspecies, and they thrive in the lush, temperate rainforests of Washington’s coastal wilderness.
Where They Roam
Roosevelt elk are most commonly found in the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, especially on Long Island, a remote, boat-accessible unit of the refuge. This island offers old-growth cedar groves, dense underbrush, and a network of old logging roads—ideal habitat for elk and a dream for wildlife watchers.
The terrain is rugged and wet, with blowdowns and thick vegetation that make hiking challenging but rewarding. Elk here have adapted to the rhythms of the tide and the quiet presence of respectful visitors.
How to Spot Them
Go early or late: Dawn and dusk are prime times for elk activity.
Listen for bugling: Especially during the fall rut, males call to attract mates and challenge rivals.
Look for signs: Tracks, scat, and rubbed trees are clues that elk are nearby.
Stay quiet and patient: These animals are shy and sensitive to noise.
A Hunter’s Challenge
Long Island is part of Washington’s GMU 699, a highly regulated hunting unit accessible only by boat. Archery and muzzleloader seasons offer fair-chase opportunities for experienced hunters. The terrain is tough, and elk here are savvy—they’ve learned to avoid well-traveled paths.
Conservation and Coexistence
Roosevelt elk are a conservation success story, but they still face challenges like habitat fragmentation and hoof disease. The Willapa refuge plays a vital role in protecting its habitat and ensuring that future generations can experience the thrill of seeing these giants in the wild.
