It has been a busy time at Lion Country Safari, with many newborn animals joining the family in the past few months. Make sure to say hello to these new additions as you drive through the safari or check out the adventure park.

Baby Animals at Lion Country Safari

Some of the many newborns you will see on your animal safari in West Palm Beach include:

Southern White Rhinoceros

Alissa is a female Southern White Rhinoceros born on August 19, 2023. Alissa is the 40th rhino calf to be born at Lion Country Safari, and guests can view her from their cars when experiencing the drive-through safari.

Fun Facts:

  • White rhinos are the second-largest land mammals.
  • A rhino's horn is not bone. Instead, it is made of keratin, the same substance our hair and nails are made of.

Lion

Mashika is a lion cub born on July 13, 2023. Mashika is the third cub born to Leela. She is still spending time bonding with mom and is not yet visible on the drive-through safari.

Fun Facts:

  • Lion cubs can have spots on their coats that fade as they grow.
  • Lions can eat up to 88lbs (40kg) of meat in one meal.

Squirrel Monkeys

Gnocchi is a squirrel monkey born on September 6, 2023. Gnocchi's parents are Ella and Archer. Rigatoni was born a few days later on September 9, 2023, to parents Rio and Archer. Guests can look for Gnocchi and Rigatoni in the squirrel monkey habitat while exploring the walk-through portion of the park.

Fun Facts:

  • Squirrel monkeys use their tails for balance.
  • Squirrel monkeys are very vocal and have 25 to 30 different calls they use.

Impala Calves

Lion Country Safari welcomed three new impala calves in the summer of 2023. One calf was born in July, and two were born in August. All calves underwent a newborn exam before reuniting with their mothers. Guests can find the impala calves and their mothers in the safari's second section.

Fun Facts:

  • Impala can jump as high as 10 feet.
  • Female impalas in a herd will typically give birth within a week of each other.

Wildebeest Calves

Summer 2023 was an excellent time for the wildebeest population at Lion Country Safari, with eight new calves born between June and July. Wildebeests are part of the Serengeti Plains section of the park, and you may be able to see the calves grazing with their mothers.

Fun Facts:

  • Wildebeests very rarely stay in one spot for a long time and often move as a herd to find new places to graze.
  • Wildebeest calves can walk within a few hours after birth and can run when they are just a few days old.

Ostrich Chicks

Two ostrich chicks were born at the end of June 2023. The ostriches at Lion Country Safari are friendly and often walk up directly to cars to greet guests.

Fun Facts:

  • Ostriches can run at 30 to 37 miles per hour and sprint up to 43 miles per hour.
  • The average ostrich egg weighs about three pounds and is about six inches in length.
