The Magic Valley, centered around Twin Falls, is framed by mountain ranges belonging to the Sawtooth National Forest and the rugged South Hills. In autumn, the region bursts into color as aspens, maples, and cottonwoods turn brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red. Scenic drives, canyon overlooks, and forest trails make this one of Southern Idaho’s most memorable places to experience fall.
Peak Season: Late September through mid-October.
Early Fall (mid-September): Cooler nights bring the first touches of yellow in higher elevations.
Mid-Fall (early–mid October): Brightest and most widespread colors, especially in the South Hills and along mountain roads.
Late Fall (late October): Many leaves begin to fade, but canyon overlooks and lower valleys still offer rich golden tones.
Perrine Bridge & Snake River Canyon Rim Drive
Begin in Twin Falls with sweeping views of the Snake River Canyon. Cottonwoods and willows along the water glow golden in the fall light.
South Hills Scenic Drive (Rock Creek Road to Magic Mountain)
A local favorite. This winding road climbs into the South Hills, where dense stands of aspens turn fiery yellow and orange. Stop at Magic Mountain Recreation Area for panoramic views.
Sawtooth Scenic Byway (north from Shoshone to Stanley)
A longer day trip but one of Idaho’s most breathtaking drives. Jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and mountain meadows blaze with fall color, especially around Ketchum and Sun Valley.
Rock Creek Park (Twin Falls): An easy, family-friendly trail with golden cottonwoods along the creek.
Third Fork–Ross Falls Trail (South Hills): A moderate hike through aspen groves that shine in autumn.
Dierkes Lake & Shoshone Falls: Pair a short hike with a view of waterfalls framed by fall foliage.
Morning & Evening Light: The Snake River Canyon glows at sunrise and sunset, making for dramatic shots of colorful canyon walls.
Aspen Groves: The South Hills are filled with aspens, perfect for capturing contrast against evergreens.
Reflection Shots: Visit alpine lakes on the Sawtooth Scenic Byway to photograph fall colors mirrored in the water.
