When summer temperatures start climbing in Southern Oregon, locals know exactly where to go.
Not the crowded tourist beaches.
Not the packed reservoirs.
The real hidden gems are scattered throughout the rivers, creeks, and swimming holes surrounding Sutherlin and the Umpqua Valley. If you're staying at KOA Sutherlin | Umpqua Valley and looking for places to cool off, relax, skip rocks, or spend an afternoon by the water, here are some favorite local spots worth exploring.
About 45 minutes east of Sutherlin, Colliding Rivers is one of the most unique natural attractions in Oregon.
It’s the only known place in the world where two rivers collide head-on. The North Umpqua and Little River crash directly into each other before continuing downstream together. During warmer months, visitors gather along the rocky shoreline to swim, float, picnic, and explore the crystal-clear water.
The surrounding canyon scenery makes the drive worth it all by itself.
Located along the North Umpqua River near Roseburg, Amacher Park is a favorite among local families.
The park features river access, shaded picnic areas, walking paths, and calmer water sections that are perfect for relaxing during hot summer afternoons. It’s an easy day trip from Sutherlin and offers a quieter atmosphere than many larger recreation areas.
Bring water shoes. Some sections are rocky, but the cold river water is unbeatable on a hot July day.
If you enjoy combining swimming with hiking and waterfalls, Susan Creek is one of the best hidden escapes in the region.
Located along Highway 138, this recreation area offers access to trails, swimming areas, and nearby waterfalls including Susan Creek Falls. The surrounding forest stays cooler during peak summer temperatures, making it a perfect mid-day retreat.
Many locals pack lunch, spend the afternoon creekside, and stop at waterfalls on the drive back.
One of the best parts of exploring the Umpqua Valley is that many great river spots are not heavily advertised.
Drive Highway 138 east toward the mountains and you’ll find dozens of pull-offs, small river access points, and scenic picnic areas along the North Umpqua River. Some are ideal for swimming, others for fishing, skipping stones, or simply relaxing beside the water.
A few local tips:
• Water temperatures stay cold even during summer
• River currents can move fast in some sections
• Morning visits are often quieter
• Many pull-offs have limited parking
Part of the fun is discovering your own favorite spot.
If you want something closer to camp, Cooper Creek Reservoir is just minutes from downtown Sutherlin.
The reservoir offers fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, bird watching, and easy shoreline access. While some visitors come primarily to fish, others simply enjoy the peaceful setting and mountain views.
It’s a great option for a relaxed evening after a day of travel.
One of the best things about staying at KOA Sutherlin | Umpqua Valley is having easy access to both adventure and relaxation. Spend the day exploring waterfalls, swimming holes, and river spots throughout the Umpqua Valley, then return to camp for a movie night, time around the fire, or a quiet evening under the stars.
