Campground Reviews

A nice place for peace and quiet. There are an abundance of species of birds to watch. Nice grassy areas with sites in the sun or shade.

I was very disappointed in the koa as they say they are a holiday and they didn’t even have a pool. Saying that was holiday was like saying you could by designer close at Dollar . The grounds were clean and it wasn’t crowded. However the office closed Friday even and there were no staff the whole time we were there!

It was great except water in one or the drawer, mold on the pot holders, and baking soda in fridge was growing. Not the cleanest.

Spent a lovely few days camping here. Initially it was supposed to be just two nights but extended to three. Randy was super friendly and helpful. Perhaps toilets could do with updating but aside from that I don’t have anything negative to say. Great stay and I do recommend.

The price was nice, but we didn't see anything to do there. The smell of the lake was horrible.

Enjoyed the stay. Everything was working and Randy helped me out with additional things. We will go back again

The camp manager went above and beyond to help us when we were stranded waiting for tires. The campground was neat and well-kept. The manager was always available.

The park is gorgeous & we enjoyed our stay. The cabins are quaint & nice & Mr Randy is the most kind, caring & attentive manager. He let us get some of his firewood so we could do s’mores with our grandchildren. The only downside is what others have mentioned & the lake that’s been drained for several years but we knew this when we booked our stay. We will definitely stay here again!

Another great weekend at Starkville KOA. Cabins were neat & clean. Randy, the host is the reason we keep coming back, he goes over & beyond to make sure our stay is without any hitches!

Worst Holiday we have stayed in. Office was never open, even during posted hours. We arrive at 4pm to find a late checking note with a map to our site. While there had been rain, the park was a muddy mess. Dips in the sites held water. The grass had grown into the site margins so our stairs were in standing water. Saw no amenities to qualify it as a Holiday. Much of the area looked abandoned.

Very clean and beautiful KOA.

The staff (1) person was very friendly. However, the place looked very tired and run down. Grass has not been cut in a while. Ant hills everywhere. Nothing really exciting going on. I understand the lake is drained, but the place could be cleaned up and made to look more inviting. Fire pits looked worn out, patio furniture just shoved out on the concrete slab and not arranged very nice.

First off, Randy was very nice and forthcoming about the campground. Secondly depending on when he purchased the campground, Randy is being screwed by the county, for the delay in repairing the dam of the lake the campground is located on. While the campground is quiet, and a good overnight stop, it really needs a lot of work to enjoy the Holiday status, that campers expect from that designation.

Randy was wonderful! The site was great and the campground was well maintained. We loved walking the park loop seeing rabbits, squirrels, and even two bald eagles.

We were expecting a Holiday style KOA but Starksville did not measure up. No internet, poor restroom facilities ,no pool and too far from main highway. Very disappointing.

Randy was most welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. A lovely peaceful site , we even saw Bald Eagles. Highly recommended Mr and Mrs Callaway, UK

The campground is conveniently located to Mississippi State University. Randy, the campground host, is very friendly and helpful. Very peaceful and quiet. The only thing that would make it better would be if the lake was filled, but that is not the campground's fault. Maybe someday politicians will do their job and serve the people and get this lake back up.

Felt sorry for the guy running it. The lake was drained, dock blocked off water slides and volleyball ball not in operation; no camp store, the park was neat and clean but what was there was very basic nice level spot. So, it was a quiet clean spot for a couple of nights but certainly nothing extra.

Peaceful and relaxing

It’s fine. There isn’t much to offer. The bed was pretty bad. I woke up as many times as I do when I sleep on the ground in a tent. The way the lake has dried up and old attractions are fenced off now made it a sad sight. It should be noted that you can’t stand in the loft area and you have to crawl to the bed.

Nice level sites. Very quiet, but close to town. They do a nice job keeping the sites clean. Not your typical KOA Holiday, but we enjoyed our stay.

Very helpful manager and staff. Clean campground and bathrooms. If expecting a Holiday kOA, this is not the place. However still a nice place to stop in and visit Starkville.

The campground and facilities were clean. The sites were level and the place was quiet. Randy, the manager, was a gracious host. I saw him often riding around checking to make sure everything was good. We will be back next year for the Starkville Derby!

I stayed at the KOA campground in Starkville during the Dachsund Derby weekend, which also coincided with a major sporting event at the local college. The campground itself was very nice and well maintained. The bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean, the pathways were well lit, and I felt safe walking around the property at night. Those were definitely positives. However, there were several issues that I feel are important for future campers to know about. First, the website stated that the tent camping sites had water and power hookups. I understood that to mean that each individual tent site would have its own hookup. When I arrived at my site, I discovered that sites 1–4 shared a single power and water hookup located between sites 1 and 2. The electrical hookup had only four outlets, meaning multiple campers potentially had to share it. Depending on which site you were staying in, you also needed a very long extension cord. I was not prepared for that because the website did not make the shared arrangement clear. Had I known in advance, I likely would have chosen a different campground. The fire pit at my site was another concern. It was essentially a ring of rocks that was heavily overgrown with fire ant beds, making me uncomfortable using it. I would not want to disturb a large fire ant colony by placing firewood in it and then risk having the ants scatter. What stood out even more was that the RV sites I walked past appeared to have much nicer metal fire rings, many with grills for cooking. I would have appreciated similar, properly maintained fire pits at the tent sites. I also found the website lacking some important check-in information. I had several questions about late arrivals and had to contact the campground for answers. Once I arrived, I discovered that much of that information was actually posted on the door of the office. Having those instructions clearly available on the website would have prevented some unnecessary back-and-forth. I understand that there was only one person working at the campground that weekend, and I recognize that he was doing his best. However, with both the Derby and a major college sporting event bringing a large number of people into Starkville, the campground was extremely busy. One person was expected to handle check-ins, phone calls, office duties, firewood sales, site preparation, cleaning, maintenance, and other responsibilities. That seemed like far too much for one person during such a busy weekend. Having an additional staff member available during major local events would have made a significant difference—one person could remain available in the office while the other handled the property and maintenance needs. Overall, I liked the campground itself and appreciated how clean and well maintained the common facilities were. My biggest issue was not the campground's appearance or cleanliness, but the lack of clear information about the tent-site hookups and the condition and inconsistency of the tent-site fire pits. Better communication on the website and additional staffing during exceptionally busy weekends would go a long way toward improving the experience and setting appropriate expectations for campers.

The camp host Randy is always professional, helpful, and accommodating. We enjoy staying here when in the area. The grounds are always well kept, the showers are always clean. Great place to stay for overnights, sports at MSU, and just for relaxing.
