You might be heading south to escape the snow, but even in sunny Louisiana, winter camping needs some prep. While we don't face the deep freeze of northern states, temperatures around Slidell can still dip below freezing at night, especially in January and February.
Knowing what to expect and how to lightly winterize your RV keeps your trip stress-free and warm!
The good news is you don’t need full arctic winterization!
In Slidell, our winter features mild temps, with daytime highs usually in the mid-50s to low-60s. However, strong cold fronts can sometimes push temps down, causing a few days of hard freezing, often into the mid-20s.
The main thing for RVers is that cold snaps are usually short, but your plumbing and external connections are vulnerable during those nights.
If you’re staying at Slidell KOA Journey during winter, follow this simple checklist to protect your investment:
1. Protect the Water Line (The #1 Priority)
• Disconnect the Hose: If temps are forecast to drop below 32°F, immediately disconnect your water hose from the park spigot and coil it up. This prevents the hose from freezing and splitting.
• Use Your Onboard Tank: Switch to the fresh water tank and the RV’s internal water pump during freezing hours.
• Open Cabinets: Open all exterior water bay doors and kitchen/bathroom cabinets where water lines run, so warm air from inside your RV can circulate around the pipes.
• Drip Faucets: Let your faucets drip slowly during the coldest part of the night. Flowing water is less likely to freeze.
2. Manage the Sewer and Grey/Black Tanks
• Do NOT Leave Valves Open: When temps are near freezing, never leave your gray or black tank dump valves open. The continuous trickle of water can freeze inside the hose or sewer pipe, causing a blockage.
• Dump Before Freezing: Only dump your tanks before a cold snap or wait until the temperature is safely above freezing.
3. Keep Inside Comfortable
• Use Heat Strategically: Use your RV’s furnace or a ceramic space heater (plugged directly into the wall, never an extension cord) to keep the inside above 40°F.
• Humidity Control: Louisiana’s humid year-round. Use a small dehumidifier to prevent condensation, which can lead to mildew and moisture on your windows and walls.
