What started as a small, single-day affair in 1978 has grown into a celebration bringing more than 100,000 people together to honor the foods, crafts, culture and heritage of the Southern Appalachian region. This festival runs on the first Friday and Saturday of October every year.
This festival is free to enjoy and is full of thrilling things to do, from listening to live music to exploring the arts and crafts created by an endless selection of vendors from all over the country. If you love running, you can sign up for the four-mile road race on Love Street, or you can become a taste tester for one of the cooking and baking contests. This three-day outdoor festival runs during the first weekend of October, building on the rich storytelling culture known throughout Appalachia and beyond.
You can participate in workshops, attend public reads or listen to conversations with your favorite storytellers. The festival sometimes holds "Story Slams!" where you'll have the chance to share your own story with the public.
