Biodiversity in Alabama

Did you know that Alabama ranks among the top five states for biodiversity? According to The Nature Conservancy, we are ranked 4th for species diversity, with 20 fish species found nowhere else in the world, 53 miles of coastline, and a massive 132,000 miles of rivers and streams. For reference, the longest possible route you can take from East to West coast is only 3,527 miles long!

Alabama is also home to a wide variety of plant species, from our signature state flower, the Camellia and our state tree, the Longleaf Pine to the well-known and widely seen Magnolia, to butterfly attracting plants like the Narrow Leaf Sunflower, Frostleaf, and Blue Mistflower, as well as endangered plants such as various species of pitcher plants, as well as the beautiful Alabama leather flower.
