Summer is finally here, and if you are looking for the perfect recipe to keep the kids entertained, active, and engaged, Coshocton has you covered.
Imagine combining the fresh air of a nature hike with the magic of a children’s book. That is exactly what you get with a StoryWalk®!
Coshocton hosts two unique StoryWalk® trails, each offering a completely different backdrop for a family day out. Whether you want to wander through a botanical garden or venture into a shaded woodland forest, these free, family-friendly trails deserve a top spot on your summer bucket list.
Here is everything you need to know to plan your ultimate summer reading adventure!
1. The Coshocton StoryWalk® at Clary Gardens
Presented by: The Coshocton County District Library
Location: 588 W. Chestnut St, Coshocton, OH 43812
Nestled inside the 20-acre hillside of Clary Gardens, this StoryWalk® is a collaboration that pairs literacy with stunning landscapes. Funded by a generous donation from the Frontier Community Connection Fund, the library installs a brand-new, beautifully illustrated children's book here each season.
Why You’ll Love It:
The Setting: Your walk takes you right around the historic red Compton House and the open-air Event Pavilion. The first post starts just behind the pavilion!
More than Just Flowers: Beyond the story, your family can explore a rose garden, a gorgeous sandstone amphitheater, a springhouse, and stone bridges.
Convenience: There is plenty of parking right by the start of the trail, along with public restrooms and a drinking fountain to keep everyone hydrated.
Tip for Visiting: The trail is entirely free and open during regular garden hours. Just keep in mind that Clary Gardens is a popular wedding venue, so the grounds are typically reserved after 2:00 PM on Saturdays from May through October!
2. The StoryWalk® Trail in the Woods at Coshocton KOA
Presented by: Coshocton KOA Holiday & Joni Peddicord
Location: 24688 County Road 10, Coshocton, OH 43812
If your family loves a woodland adventure, you will want to head over to the Coshocton KOA. You don't have to be camping there to enjoy it—this trail is completely open to the general public at no cost! The KOA switches out their featured book every single month from mid-April through October, meaning every visit brings a whole new story to uncover.
Why You’ll Love It:
Beat the Summer Heat: Located in the KOA’s beautiful, mature woodland area, this path is serenely shaded, making it the perfect escape on hot July days.
The Giant Sycamore: The trail connects beautifully with nature, and if you keep exploring, you can hunt for the campground's crown jewel—a magnificent, towering giant sycamore tree.
Wildlife Spotting: Because the trail is in a wooded path, keep your eyes peeled for local birds, deer, and interesting forest plants as you read your way from page to page.
Tip for Visiting:
Before you head into the woods, just make sure to pop into the Coshocton KOA Camp Store to register. The trail is open any time the store is open!
Why StoryWalks® are the Ultimate Summer Activity
If you’ve never done one before, a StoryWalk® places the laminated pages of a children’s book onto sturdy posts along an outdoor path. As you walk to the next post, the story unfolds!
Combines Literacy and Movement: Kids are so eager to see what happens next in the book that they happily hike to the next station.
Fun for All Ages: Toddlers love the pictures, early readers can practice their skills aloud, and parents get to enjoy a gorgeous walk in nature.
It’s Completely Free: High-quality family bonding that doesn't cost a dime? You can't beat that.
Plan Your Adventure Today!
Why choose just one? Make it a double-feature weekend or space them out across the summer.
Don't forget to pack some water, lather on the sunscreen, and maybe even pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at Clary Gardens or grab a treat from the KOA camp store.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition (VBPC) and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
